Hatch squeak
I am trying to locate source of squeak from general hatch area. Last weekend, I took hatch off and put in new 3M urethane, didn't solve problem. Only thing left to try is clean pin receivers and put in HHS2000. Do you think this will solve the issue? Or are there other non-obvious areas to try?
My hatch squeek is in the right rear post of the hatch that is held by the release mechanism. Someone suggested wrapping a big rubber band around it so that when it closes there is no metal to metal contact. I'm going to give it a try when I get Sundays newspaper
fyi, I tried changing the heigth of the post, but if I make it too short to eliminate the play, if I hit a bump in the road, the post comes out of the release.

For a laugh just try oiling the pins in the hinges, and make sure there in, I used to get anoying noises from there and a hinge pin was working loose, then the rear seat catch started up so it's worth a look there too.
hey tom that bump thing with the hatch popping open is so damm funny, it happens to me too when i try to shorten the rod bolt to eliminate the rattles, the closer they are the less noise but the hatch pops open on bumps, the farther they are the more noise and less likely the hatch will pop open, so i conclude they arent the problem but its the hatch seal, glass, or side mounted glass to frame pieces at fault
Hi everyone,
ON the squeek and pop up issues:
Had all those problems. The solution is:
Replace the mushroom closing studs. Yes you can file them to be square, but the new ones work the best.
The real fix is the above plus new shocks for the hatch. Yes, I know that the old ones still hold up. But it solves both problems.
It also think that replacing the hatch seal helped alot. can not confirm that. But, it makes sence.

for kicks, try tightening the spare wheel down, i've discovered mine keeps wiggling loose, and making rattling noises... i clamped it down good and no more rattles!!!! took me a few times opening/closing hatch TIGHTLY to figure this out...

Could someone please clarify if this squeak in question is a high pitched “squeak” or if it is a lower pitched “creak”. Mine makes a “creak” – almost a popping sound, especially when it is hot out.
I tightened my mushroom posts (1 ½ turns) and oiled the hinges to no avail. I assume that the problem for me is the result of the ever degrading condition of my glass-to-frame seal.
On a side note, I noticed that my creak is much more pronounced when I have a passenger in the car.

I'm interested in hearing more about the hatch pin replacements combined with new rubber.
Think a bit before replacing the hatch shock struts. There is a school of thought that if they are new and really stiff they lead to hatch glass seperation. I'm keeping my old ones which can barely hold up the hatch when it is cold out. I don't really want to become familiar with resealing my hatch glass.
