Buying a car with a clutch problem
Hi 944 guys,
I have a 964 but I want to pick up a cheap 944 for a race project. I'm looking at one locally and the owner is describing a clutch problem as follows:
"Clutch needs work, (NOT slipping, but not engaging fully. The car is
pulling forward when in 1st gear and holding clutch down, I'm not a
mechanic, so don't ask me what's exactly wrong with it.
besides that clutch issue, it's technically in good condition."
I'm hoping it's something simple like a brake/clutch fluid reservoir leak.

Hi Andrew, Check out the link below in Clark's Garage.com. It goes from A - Z, look under "C" for Clutch. Sounds as if the clutch is not releasing all the way. Could be a number of things, check for wear, need to bleed the Slave Cylinder or may even be a clutch fork arm broken (hope not). A cheap 944 purchase soon becomes an expensive one if you have to replace the clutch, a 16 hr job plus $600 - $800for a clutch.

Well I did end up buying it. I was surprised at how well it drove despite the owners description. You had to start it in first gear, if you didnt it would grind when you attempted to put it in first with the clutch depressed. At startup it would begin to inch forward as if you were just at the clutches activation point. Then the clutch would engage when you almost had the pedal at the end of it's travel and start to drive as normal. You could down shift and upshift if the engine revs matched the wheel speed (if that makes sense).
I definitely agree on the slave cylinder bleeding, I will try that this week.

We bled the slave cylinder but there was no change, the clutch is still not disengaging. Is there anything else simple this could be before we start tearing the clutch apart?
