Unhappy How do your turn 944 engine by hand?

While trying to clean battery cable ground above clutch housing, the nut fell into the opening for the clutch housing. I have removed the starter hoping the nut fell down into the bottom of the housing, not so lucky.

So, how do I turn the engine by hand in hopes the nut will fall down to the bottom and I can remove it. Afraid to turn engine with starter in fear of major damage.

Anyone else out there do something this dumb??!!

there's a big nut on the front of the crankshaft you can turn with a wrench. It's like 23mm or something.

24mm

a deep well works best but there is not much room for a ratchet.

You need a 24mm socket and the some force.. If you need to rotate the engine quite a bit I'd suggest to take off your spark plugs.. A cheap (sub $100) endoscope might be of use also for inspecting internals of bellhousing.

one the final question : TONS of it. These things usually happen when something you planned did not work out so you take it apart, fix something and put it back.. and then realize something was left out, take it all apart (3AM) and then bloody eyes put it back together...

Default Done. Thanks ! Now back to the dead instruments issue.

The nut fell out after the first quarter-turn rotation. Wheeeeew! Put all back together and cleaned negative battery ground and another ground adjacent to it. Still no instruments. Cleaned the grounds on each side of the top engine compartment also. All fuses check good.

Any other ideas? Starts and runs good, just no instruments, tach, or speedometer. Panel lights ok.

There are grounds on the back of the Instrument Panel that could need a good cleaning too..

Except Tach and Speed, do the other gauges works?

Only a faint red battery light at the bottom of the voltometer gauge when starting. Otherwise, all dead. No movement whatsoever during ON/START/IGNITION.
