My 1990 944 S2 has an annoying small oil leak from one of the studs at the exhaust flange of cylinder no 3. The oil is dripping at a rate of one drop every 5 minutes down on the exhaust tube below where it evaporates into a bad-smelling fume that enters the interior of the car. I am afraid that it will eventually one day ignite. First I suspected that the leak came from the cylinder head cover gasket but that is not the case. I suspect that there is some connection from the bore of the stud to the interior of the engine lubrication system. Can someone please confirm if this is so. I have tried to undo the stud but it hard to remove and I am reluctant to use too much force being afraid that it will break. I would appreciate any comments, thanks.

There is no connection from that thread of the stud to the interior of the head that I have ever seen. My guess would be that you have a leaking valve cover gasket somewhere in the area circled below possibly just one valve cover bolt not tight enough or an old gasket and that the oil is dripping down.

My S2 has a leak from the rear of the head gasket and the oil wicks around the corner to the exhaust flange making it look like it is from above the exhaust.
Tip: Use a UV torch (google UV LED flashlight) to find oil leaks. Fresh oil fluoresces under UV, just like other organic fluids.
Cheers,
Mike
