Default Advice on engine removal...

I've got an 86 944 NA that I'm restoring.

I'm in the process of doing the head gasket, water pump, oil cooler, t-belts & all of the "rotted" emission/vacuum hose.

The engine is currently in the car minus the head and oil cooler.
There are quite a few oil leaks so I've decided to remove the block and clean it up. At the same time I want to reinstall a clutch and new engine gaskets since I'm already this far.

The hood is off and I want to remove the engine from the top with a hoist.
This leads me to my question: Is there anything I have to be aware of when unbolting the engine from the bell housing? I vaguely recall a post about some sort of circlip holding the drive shaft spline in place??? Please advise as I don't want to damage anything.

Thanks in advance.

I just pulled an engine yesterday, I kind of cheated though, I unbolted and lowered the engine and with no engine i was able to manually life up the front end of the car (surprisingly my back still feels great) from there I propped up the front with a 6x2 and slid the engine out the side under the wheel well.

I used a motorcycle jack and it worked fantastic! highly recommended if you have one handy!

good luck and don't drop it!

You can take the engine out the top if you want.

Use www.clarksgarage.com for basic instructions and torque values for reassembly. The height they gave was not accurate for an S2. The front of the car needed about 30-32" of clearance in the front. It makes it a hell of a lot easier to drop the engine down onto a creeper and then tie strap it down and roll it out. The drop on cardboard or carpet thing doesn't really work. Also raise the car in stages going around the car because lifting the front then the back large distances at a time can make it somewhat unstable.

Dropping the engine on a peice of carpet does work. You need to have the backing side up and it slides easily. Then you don"t have to lift the front as high. Used this several times.
