Default 2.7L 944??

Hi all,

I am faced with a strange choice. I am in need of an extra car. The stipulation is that I must pay cash for the car, i want something "decent", but it won't be a long term investment. I will keep the car for a few years.

I am paying at the moment about 1100-1200 a month for a rental car. I dont want to spend that much when I travel (and its always to the same place). Instead of a hotel, I leased an appartment. I am doing consulting and am now living in Switzerland 60% of the time. I need the car there.

I was looking at audi, BMWs, etc. I found a decent BMW 328 (193hp) in the range I want to spend. Then looking around a found a pretty nice 1989 944 2.7L in the same price range.

So, am I crazy thinking about this car? I know it will be underpowered and isnt all that fast (to put this in perspective I have a nicely modified 951 sitting in my garage). But in CH, there are speed cameras where I am living every 6 kms or less. Can't go over 120kmh. Period.

Now, that said, I do have weekends where I can go up to Germany for some cruising on an autobahn. Also, the Nuerburgring is only a 6 hour drive. A 944 (although underpowered) would probably be a fun car.

I must also admit that my first porsche was a 944 and 11 years ago a got rid of it for the 951. I was early 20s when I got the 944. Put 80k miles on it and was my car in college.

One thing that I have always thought is that the 944 is a more forgiving car than the 951. I know people will say otherwise, but the power a 951 can put down can get speeds very high qucikly. A 944 typically cant outpower its suspension and brakes.

So, 3 series BMW (E36 series) or this 944?? I am crazy?

I drove a 85.5 944 in Germany for 6 years. Sure, it's no 951....but I wasn't getting passed by many cars. I think the 944 NA is only lacking in power here in the USA where sustained high speeds are not possible (here it's all about quick acceleration). Good looks, fairly easy to work on.

I've had that 944 for 14 years now.....still drive it every day.

i think euro 944's are more powerful than the one's in the USA. either car would do. a 2.7l in usa has around 185hp, the bmw has 193...not really a difference when you consider that the beemer is likely to be heavier. it's all you personal choice, it'd be tough for me if i were making it

185hp - o rly? My '84 NA runs a euro '89 engine (10.9-1 compression), no accessories (ps/ac) - gets ~170 on the dyno on 98ron pump fuel. I suppose that's 185hp at the crank...

Buy it, even a few more hp makes the NA a lot more fun. :-)
