Hi,
I read in a UK magazine (exact publication eludes me at the moment) that S2 cylinder bores aren't rebuild-able like a 2.5 liter bore. Is there any truth/substance to that?
Stated another way, once the cylinders have been worn/scored beyond a certain point, what options are available to return the engine to a service-able state?
Cheers

All 944 blocks cannot be honed using the same methods as most engine blocks due to the material that the block is made out of. That said, there are a FEW shops out there that do have the correct equipment to do the process, and I don't see any reason you couldn't do the same to a 3.0L block that you could a 2.5L block.... or course I'm no expert.
There's also the sleeve option that Chris White uses. He basically just removes the old bores and replaces them with entirely new iron bores (which then allows the same processes to be used as used on any other engine).

Hi,
Here's one publication that mentions the general concern but I can't find the reference that they promise.

See page 7 of the pdf - last full paragraph.

Unlike what's written in the article linked above, the block is made of Alusil, which is actually rebuildable up to a certain bore size.

Hi svtlrtls , We had a customers 944S2 bored to the first oversize recently to accept Mahle Motorsport pistons , worked fantastic with a slight increase in compression from 10:9 to 1 , to 11 to 1 , with no problems and quiet in operation as opposed to the two wet sleeved ones we have done in the last 18 months or so.
