Default Loose stick / shifter

On my 1991 944S2, the stick shift has gotten quite loose. It will move over an inch forward and back in any gear without actually shifting, and in neutral it will move left and right more.

I've also found lately that the leather boot keeps popping up so it's also loose. That's just cosmetic, but annoying.

Could anyone recommend what parts I should investigate or replace?

thanks,
Bryan

Sounds like the pin on your shifter handle has become elongated and the c-clip has fallen off. This is very common (happened to me about 6 months ago).

www.944online.com and others sell a kit to fix that up again for you.

It is a pretty easy fix. I think that Clarks-Garage has a nice write up on it.

Cheers,

Keith

The adjuster at the linkage on top of the box could be the issue as well.

First is the shift lever pin, as mentioned. This fits into the shift linkage rod, which can wear out the new pin quickly if it's also worn out and you don't replace it. It happened to me: put in a new pin and about 3 months later it was worn out again because the hole in the shift rod was grinding it down.

Also, while you're at it, you need to make sure that there are no holes/splits in the rubber bellows between the shifter and the torque tube. This keeps the carbon monoxide out of the cabin.

Hope this helps.

The shifter rod is steel. The shift lever cross shaft is a softer metal, like brass. It's supposed to wear out first. Just get a new shift lever. This fixes most looseness in the shifting.
