Thanks for the reply. What I found interesting about this project was it went a different route. The basis engine was not tampered with, much lighter on the wallet plus it seems to be working great for you.

Mike the factory 951 exhaust hardware kicks butt, they dont freeze up over time and the heat doesnt really affect them ever. I highly recomend the stock Porsche hardware!

By the way great looking and Im sure performing car!

Hello Mike:
I just want to congrtas you on your project. It looks very clean with much attention to detail, the way that that kind of project must be done. Just want to comment on the total timing retard for your engine. It's always worth to run a conservative timing retard, specially on your engine with stock internals and compression. 24 deg. at 10 psi with 11 AFR on stock compression seems a little agresive to me. Just my two cents. Good luck.

Hi TurboCab, thanks for the advice I will a close watch on detonation there. BTW when you ran the 60-1hifi on your 968 what revs did you get 10psi on, I recall you had a stage 5 wheel?

thanks

I can attest to the quality of Mike's work as I saw the car on Saturday. Absolutely A1 job and if you didn't know Porsches, you'd easily be convinced that it's a stock car. We ran out of time and I didn't get a chance to sample the improvements, but I'm sure it's as good as it looks.
Well done Mike.

by using the standalone are you getting a bunch of error codes or warning light? or does the car run like a totally stock car outside of engine performance? it seems like with so many 951 owners boring out to get more displacement, it was a matter of time before someone did a simple reverse engineering to get 3L turbo power for everyday use and a sig power boost for S2.

i will be doing this one day. thanks for the inspiration.

Hi Culture, The standalone completely replaces the Motronic, there are no error lights as I now control everything the engine does via the aftermarket EMS.
BTW it is also possible to install an EMS in a pseudo piggy back style just taking over the complete control of fuel and ignition from the Motronic the rest of the functions like fuel pump, emission control etc are done by the Motronic, then you may get some check lights coming on....

Found a slight problem with the conversion - don't use the stock exhaust like I have done it just will not flow the horsepower this now generates - not a surprise really going from 211hp to around 400hp

I did some pressure tests and it is showing over 12psi back pressure when on boost at 6000rpm this is measured just before the cat, from what I have been told and read 2 - 4psi is a good exhaust only backpressure.

So I am going to a full 3" including the down-pipe. That should also improve the spooling too.

Regardless of the back pressure the car has been running great, so I'm looking forward to seeing what the new upgrade will do.

do you mean your going to a 3" cat back exhaust only? or are you chaning the downpipe as well? or are you starting from the headers all the way back? i was wondering if there was going to end up being a restriction with the stock pipes.

Culture - at first we will be trying to fit a custom made 3.5" downpipe, but its very tight in there, if it fits then will continue with 3.5" cat, 3.5" centre muffler to the rear single 3.5" in twin 2.5" out.

If I cant fit the 3.5" downpipe, which I am told/read will be very hard to fit, I will use 3.0" downpipe to the cat, 3.0" cat, 3.0" centre muffler to the rear single 3.0" in twin 2.5" out. .

My S2 stock system is a single 2.25" cat, centre and rear muffler.

Hi Richard, just ran out of time with Xmas on the door, although a couple of weeks back I purchased the mufflers & cat. A 3.5" Magnaflow ultra metal cat (they say it flows 600CFM), a 14" x 5" round 3" Magnaflow centre muffler and a 8" x 5" x 18" oval rear 3" in 2 x 2.5" out. These were the biggest they made that will fit the space available. These ere all polished stainless straight through design. But they are sat in the spare room at the momemt!

I was at the exhaust place last week checking clearances and he is confident to fit the 3.5" downpipe which will be custom made then to the 3.5" cat, then 3" rest of the way.

Car is still going well running 10psi, since it has got hotter here in Sydney I have noticed a new issue, the intake temps rise very quickly when in traffic, the K&N is mounted behind the headlight and thats sucking in hot air from the engine bay, so will need to route the filter into the guard, there seems to be space to do that, I'm pretty sure that will fix the problem.

BTW this is where having a standalone is so good, I have set up both mixture and ignition compensation so that as intake temp rises I lean off mixture a few percent and more importantly back off the ignition timing too, same deal with engine temps, so the EMS looks after the rising temps. Downside is you really feel the drop in power as the temps rise. But better than a popped engine.

Will be in mid January when I get the exhaust done now, as here in Aust most business shut down for an extended time over the Xmas season.

Mike:

Thanks for the update and all of the great information in this thread. It is amazing what can be done with these motors.
