944S-New Owner-Timing Belt-When change?
Hi,
I just bought a 1987 944S, thanks to all who gave me advice before my purchase. Everything works great, except the a/c and the power windows (although putting a 30 amp fuse fixes the problem temporarily, I know there's a short somewhere). I will have these problems fixed later this year. What I'm not sure on is when the timing belt should be replaced. I am the second owner of this car, and I know the belt was replaced about 15K ago. My problem is the year it may have been replaced. The original owner had it sit in his garage basically undriven for 3-5 years. Because it was garaged, does the age of the timing belt really matter? This is an expensive repair I was hoping to put off until next year and it really does drive great. I don't plan on driving more than 5K between now and when I put it away for next winter. What should I do without dropping $2K on a new belt at a decent repair shop?
Also, if anyone knows of a 944 mechanic in the Columbus, Ohio area that I could be put in touch with it would be awesome. I joined PCA and hopefully my local chapter can put me in touch with someone as well.
Thanks Everyone!
John

Uh, I highly doubt that it would even be 1k. I mean maybe a few hundred bucks. How many miles are on your new 944S?

I have 144000 miles on it. The belt was replaced and then retentioned around 130000, so I should be ok but again the age of the belt was around 5 years I think. If it only costs a few hundred, awesome! Any contacts for mechanics or shops people know of?
