'84 cooling fan resistor

'84 cooling fan resistor
The cooling fans on our '84 do not continue to run after the ignition is turned off. From the procedures posted on Clark's Garage, the problem matches that of a bad resistor that controls the cooling fan speed. Later year 944s and 968s have two resistors mounted on a plate attached to the firewall near the battery.
Our '84 should only have one, but I can't find it. It's not mounted on the firewall like on our '95 968 and I took out the glovebox after being told it was back there, but didn't find it. Can anybody tell me where the resistor should be? I thought it would be the same ceramic disc style as the two used on later 944s and the 968s, I have a set of two from a late year 944 for parts.
thanks, sp4149
