I am having the same difficulty from my car. I am trying to change the dampener and cannot get th etorque tube away from the ball housing more than an inch or so.
I see there is an external lockring between the flywheel and center hub of the dampener plate. It seems if this stupid ring comes off, the shaft will travel trough the dampener hub and all will come apart.
However, I cannot figure a way to get th elock ring off. The thing is hard to access and not a hefty size ring. I am really losing my patience with this situation. I have blown hours and hours to get to this point. By the way...it took a long time to realize thgis ring was even there. Took the bolt out of dampener clamp like you ...thought I had it in the bag.
If you find out how to get the thing off, please e-mail me at salnick@comcast.net
Thanks

per Socal Driver:
"You have to remove the starter and unbolt the rubber center drive shaft damper from the light weight flywheel. There is a clip on the end of the drive shaft that you can not get to. Once the adaptor is unbolted you have to unbolt the engine from the bell housing leaving the bell housing bolted to the torque tube."
