Question 944 S Ring and Pinion on 944 NA

Hi fellow 944ers,

My early 1985 944 NA is suffering from the transmission whine that plagues our cars. It seems to present itself after I've driven the car for a while. I had it checked out by a local transmission shop, and the guy told me he believes it's the ring and pinion. The car has 65K miles on it, and I had the tranny oil changed to full synthetic (Royal Purple, as the shop didn't have Swepco 201) as soon as I got the car.

I can get my hands on a 9:35 ring and pinion from a 1988 944 S. Would they fit my baby?

The 944S R&P is only marginally stronger than the 944 8V R&P and is not really worth the effort and expense to swap. This is no small job, and requires a lot of expensive (and hard to find) tools, including a press.

If your R&P is whining more than normal (some mechanical whine really is normal), and it hasn't blown up yet, then the best thing to do is have the R&P re-shimmed to take up the lash and extend the life of your trans. Honestly, even this option may cost you more than just driving the car until the trans blows up and then sourcing another good used 944 8V trans for $400-$500 and swapping it in.

Not to mention that the 9:35 is not really ideal for your 8V 944 motor and powerband.

Tifosiman speaks the truth. You would have a lot less acceleration. The 944 8v rear end ratio is 3.89 to one.
