RI Fast Eddie

I just purchased by second '89 944 S2 and it is having the same problem my first one had. The air bag light has come on and after several tries to cure the problem, nothing has worked. My mechanic is now recommending replacing the air bag computer, which will cost over $2k and can only be done with an old part as Porsche is no longer making new air bag computers for this car. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If I don't fix the computer but instead unhook the air bag sensor do you think there will be a big hit to the resale value? Also does anyone have any thoughts in general on old air bags? Are there any problems with a 15 year old air bag system? Am I better off without it?
