Default S2 Airbox

Why does my S2 have a cone air filter crammed under the nose panel?
Am I wrong in thinking it should be flat?
And its held on by a pipe clamp.(hack job?)

The stock airbox contains flat filter and sits under the nose panel in an S2. A pipe clamp is common used to hold cone filters -- not too surprising if the previous owner decided to replace the stock filter with a cone.

Sad really, the stock airbox and filter is really nice and tuned to provide more perfromance. The cone filter is tuned to remove money from some kid's wallet.

You can occasionally pick up an S2 airbox on eBay -- well, at least that's where I picked one up for my project. Otherwise, I'd check the Porsche dismantlers.

It is a common upgrade to replace the stock air filter with a larger K&N cone filter. The K&N flows more air and has less restriction than stock. Not sure if the improvement is measurable but seat of pants seems like it is better.

there is a whole thread on K&N filters,
do a search, main concensus is that it is not good for your engine.

Also (I'm not sure if this is more for the 968)

but the Flow of air through the "proper" air filter box, is designed specifially, it can cause problems if you use a coneical filter, something about the mass air unit.

Sorry have not discussed this ion ages, but your probably better off with stock filter and panel.

replace at service periods or every 3k miles, you WONT have any problems

K&N is also more of a placebo effect on performance than anything else

exactly what I was thinking. Why pull the whole unit just to have a cone? If it was the right decision, im pretty sure porsche would have done it in the first place.
Still searching for one, ebay isnt coming up with anything. My last resort is to go directly to porsche.
Wish me some luck!

One downside to the cone filter is the loss of the airbox volume, which is important to performance.

Factory manual states 12k, and unless the car is used mostly in heavy traffic jams of a terribly polluted city I don't see much point in replacing the OEM paper filter more often than every 6k.

Hey Thom,

A service interval is like anything else a "minimum" recommendation, depending on use and conditions.

Racing a 944 is different from say a garage queen.

I know people who do a "mini-service" every 3k miles.

I suppose you could change the filter every week if you really wanted to, it sure wont hurt.

But you are right about the 12k miles bit, but there is nothing wrong or incorrect about doing it more freqently
