Question Retrofit 86 Turbo Trans into 87 NA 944's ???

Is there any issues with retro fitting an 86 944 Turbo transaxle into a 87 944 NA?

I don't believe there is any issues with this. It only becomes a issue with pre 85.5 cars. The thing is that you will now have gear ratios that do not match the performance profile of you NA engine, too tall gearing.

I'm looking to retro the LSD and oil cooler components so the gearing would stay the same. Any issues with this that you know of ?

are you saying you are going to replace the ring & pinion of the turbo transaxle with the NA's R & P so the gearing stays the same?

You can swap the LSD and cooler set up from a 951 into a 944 trans. Hopefully you have some experience with working on transmissions. The swap would be fairly straight forward, however while you have the transmission cracked open you would want to inspect/replace the bearings and possible add more r&p shims to accomodate for any wear that the n/a r&p may have on it.

The other thing to consider here is that the 951 LSD may be worn out. This would make all of this effort a bit of a waste.............

I believe that the turbo (951) transmission can mate up without problems to any 944 (early or late) or 968. Similarly, the 6-speed 968 transmissions will work fine with any 944 - at least that's what I've seen posted. Someone who's actually done it might have a few words to say about that though. . .

I have the '86 LSD 951 tranny in my '83. Clean, easy bolt-in.
