Hmmm, do a search of the forum and read some posts. You will find a good deal of information in your search efforts

You would be better off getting a supercharging kit and using it on the existing motor in my opinion. Converting over to a turbo would involve alot of work and with the prices of 951s (944Turbos) where they are, by the time you convert a rgular 944 to a 951 you most likely could have bought a good used 951.

there are several levels available.

Hmm, I think you would have a few troubles converting an engine into an entire car =)

This topic has been gone over 100 times, especially over on pelican.

Sure, but it'll cost way more than just selling your car and buying a 951. Search the 944 board, it has been done but I do not think anyone who did it ended up happy. It's best if you have a turbo donor car so you can grab all the parts you need. If your time is free, you like the challenge, you don't care about resale, and you have bags of money it can be done. If you just want a faster car go out and buy one, it's waaay cheaper and easier.

Nope, you would have to change over the internals. Running over 6-7psi of boost on an engine with a 10+:1 compression ratio is suicide.
The turbo's have 8.5:1 compression ratio IIRC.

The turbo's also have upgraded brakes, suspension, and many other little parts, body panels, etc...

It can still be done, and many cars nowadays are low pressure turbos with 6-7 psi of boost on a 9 or 10:1 motor, but you can make a lot more power with a higher pressure turbo on a low CR motor. That is another good reason not to bother turbo-ing an NA, for the same money you could sell the NA and buy a Turbo, and instead of a maxed-out NA at 225HP you have a turbo that can then take mods up to 325 at the crank.

951s are easy to find - just look around.

Asking "how do I turbo my n/a?" is a surefire way to get flamed into next week on some boards. The people here have shown great restraint.

FWIW, there are a couple of turbo options, but they require a lot of work, patience and willingness to throw money into the car. I am lucky to have one of 32 turbo conversion kits produced by Callaway engineering designed expressly for this purpose, but the full cost of the conversion including everything (not including bodywork and paint) will be about $3,500 - to give you an idea of what it will cost. Keep in mind I bought my car for about $2,500.

This is somewhat of a special case and I'm putting a LOT into this thing to turn it into a truly unique machine that's going to be fast, a great track car / street car and have good collectable value. If you really want to tackle a conversion project like this, I would say either have a whole crapload of extra money and free time to get it done, or plan on it taking a LONG time to do correctly. You MUST be patient and do the upgrade correctly or you WILL be sorry. There is simply no way in hell you can just bolt up a turbocharger to one of these cars, dial up the boost and expect the car to go like hell. It might for a little while, but it will eventually blow up on you with very expensive consequences.

Most 944s that have not been recently rebuilt have well over 100,000 miles on them and varying levels of maintenance care. These engines / drivetrains certainly can go a lot further (there are documented 944s out there with well over 350,000 miles on the original engines & transmissions without rebuild) but turbo-ing something DOES induce a lot of extra stresses into things. It needs to be built up for it.

My advice would be to either find a recently rebuilt 944 and spend a little extra for it so you "know what you're getting" as a starting point and are confident in the strength of the components, or plan on doing replacement of internals, head gasket, water pump, seals, rod bearings, possibly pistons & rings, etc. before you even THINK about bolting up a turbo.

If you get an n/a and simply slap a turbo on it and blow up your engine, people are only going to point at you and shake their heads and say "what an idiot". If you do it correctly you'll get a nice, reliable, fast, and beautiful car out of it. The choice is yours.

Or you can buy a 951.
