Default Machined head

Hi,
How do I measure the head to get the measurement I need for the proper gasket thickness. The shop manual shows a picture with <~~~~~A~~~~~~>
but it looks like one line on one end of the lines doesn’t go to the flat part of the head. Thanks

Me measuring , the numbers are no where near 146-147

Is this a 16V head? Im guessing so.

There is a boss that is just slightly below the valve cover plane - I think its closer to one of the ends of the head. Thats the measurement point. You measure from the boss down to the combustion chamber plane.

I happen to have a head sitting at my house Ill try to snap a photo for you. The FSM is very vague on where to measure, and this threw me for a loop as well.

I think I can see it in your photo (circled) but will try to get a better pic for you

Default Thanks for your help and time

I added some more pictures for you to get your opinion. I had that head machined at a shop and was wondering about the pot holes from corrosion. The man at shop said they are outside the passage area of gasket, not to worry. Should I put jb weld in there or what? Thanks

I was wondering about getting this done if I had to.

Not good. Will not seal. Needs welding and resurfacing.

One of the combustion chambers had some metal debris hammering away in it. That will definitely need to get fixed.

In terms of the pitting, some folks say as long as its not on the fire ring, its not a problem. I had this issue with a 968 head I just received, and I opted to have it welded by a local guy. Costed me $75, so IMO its worth fixing, whether or not it will affect the sealing. Do it right, do it once.

Here is the 968 head I am working on. Pitting circled in red. Had it welded. Will take to machine shop to get resurfaced (as well as seats/valves ground, new guides).

before

after (before resurfacing)

Fairly minor compared to yours
