Default Intermittent clicking.

Okay guys here’s a new one. On my ‘86 NA there’s an intermittent clicking that happens on accel decel and in cornering. Doesn’t always happen, and is not temp dependent. My normal go to is the CVs. Passenger side is nice and right. Drivers side has a small amount of play.

what’s weird is, when the sound happens, it goes away when the clutch is engaged. As I slowly let the cutch back out when rolling, the clicking comes back. As far as I know this clutch has around 10k miles on it and the car is shifting beautifully no matter what.

Any ideas???

Thanks as always,

Jake

I'd go back to your CV joints. Clean them to inspect, then simply repack with quality CV grease if okay. I'll bet you'll find at least one bad one. Look for a torn boot and start there.

Hopefully the video I uploaded works, I triple checked the CVs there are no tears and the trailing arms are clean. The noise appears to be coming from the passenger side of the car (which I might add that CV axel has zero play it it’s as if it’s brand new) and is related to wheel speed, however it vanishes completely when the car is in neutral or when the clutch is engaged. It is present in every single gear, and comes and goes. Has me starting to panic a little bit lol.

I should also add this car has an updated clutch it is not running a rubber center clutch. The noise isn’t an oscillating grinding sound similar to what the TT bearings make when they begin to fail, it is a distinct clicking.

Edit: checked again this time immediately after a drive. Passenger CV is totally shot. Problem solved!

Axles can go bad without any outward visible indication. My last set were Rock Auto axles installed by the PO - one of the cages just exploded one day

I replaced mine with the VW type 2 CV joints and reused existing 944 axle shafts. Great quality and value for the price considering the alternatives out there. Most cheap axles do not last. You must have axle shafts with 33 splines (I think all late model 944s do but you should double check)
Amazon Amazon

If they are clicking when the car is in gear and not clicking when in neutral its because when in gear, they are under load. This indicates to me an issue with the axles.

Thanks for the info! I mistakingly assumed they clicked in or out of gear because I had the same exact side and part fail on my 83 NA. Rather than rebuilding simply due to time constraints I get the autozone duralast ones. They are of good quality and they pop right in for $100. They come with all new hardware and bearing grease as well. I never had an issue after using them in 83 so I’ll be using them again. Just sucks I’d have rather spent $100 on some shiny new enamel crest hub caps for the fuchs!

Do you have a link for the duralast ones you purchased? I’d like to check them out as I need to do both sides of my early 85’

Here you go 👍🏻
https://www.autozone.com/drivetrain/cv-axle/porsche/944

a note, when I picked it up this time around it didn’t come with the hardware. Annoying but not the end of the world.

How did you check them? I'm having a similar issue when accelerating from a stop.

Same here with the intermittent clicking. Got the AutoZone cv joints axle assembly last week. Let's see how long these lasts.
