Default Early Sunroof Problems

I'm sure there are a hundred things I should be working on first with my early 85 944....but summer is just around the corner and I'm looking forward to having a car with a sunroof. Sadly mine currently doesn't work. :/ When I press the rocker switch (either direction) I hear the motor hum, but there's no movement from the rear latches. Does anyone have any debug tips on how I should diagnose what is broken in the chain of force transfer from the motor? My understanding is that due to it being an early car it's not the nylon gear problem that is often the cause. Clark's garage seems to indicate that it is definitely the gearbox based on this symptom?

Alternatively I'd be happy converting it to manual but from my searching it looks like the rear 924 latches are fairly expensive and hard to come by.

As always thanks for the help!

You have to look at it and see what the issue is.. start with looking in the left rear where the Motor is. Have someone actuate it and see whet moves and what doesn’t.

Thanks GPA951s. So I've been playing around with it to see what's wrong. It looks like the motor turns but the connections after that are a bit concealed. That being said I think the mechanicals are not the issue (mainly). If I support the sunroof, with the key set to accessories, by hand I can actually help the arms raise electronically. They also mostly lower on their own using the switch. Where they seem to totally fail is when I put the key in position 1 (accessories off but key in ignition), and attempt to use the switch to lower the arms for sunroof removal. Following Clark's garage I removed the switch and probed between pins 4,1, and 2 (Clark doesn't give a ground pin to use but from what I can tell I think 4 is the pin). In this case in position 1 both 1 and 2 are 0V, and in position 2 both are 12V.....From here is there any thoughts on how I can determine if it's an issue in my steering column or the sunroof relay/micro switches?

Thanks for the help!

I had similar symptoms after I worked on my heater core and had my center console out. Turns out, I put the sunroof switch in backwards. It was hard to do, since there is a little plastic pin in the cable connector to prevent this, but I managed somehow. I felt really stupid when I figured it out. Sounds like this might not be the case for you, as you've had the switch out to troubleshoot.

944 foot to the floor has a guide on sunroof issues, including how to remove the headliner and replace broken pieces of the mechanism.
