Default 944 headlights stuck open, now battery drain

Hello All, thanks for looking to help me here. After a short, uneventful drive in good weather recently, I shut my 88 NA off and turned the **** to kill the lights. All shut off, but they did not close. Not a daily driver, so a week later I tried to start car and battery, (older red top optima) was dead. I charged it, car started, but lights still stayed open. Shut car off, lights still up. Next day battery dead again. Optima tested marginal so I replaced with same new. After a day or two, that new battery was dead. I recharged it and now disconnect it. Car runs fine and charges battery. I replaced relay in fuse box, no fix. I can pull parts from my 87 to swap in, but fearful of damage to those parts. Thoughts? Thanks!

Hi,

I seem to have the opposite problem. Lights would not go up. Fuses are OK, any idea?

It could be that the relay on the side of the headlight motor is shot..If you pull the motor, and fight like the dickens to get the bottom cover off ( you'll have to unscrew both screws on the white plastic plug), and open up the gearbox section of the motor. Inside you will find a disc that three wipers ride on. There is a small ball bearing in the center of the shaft. Don't lose it. Remove the disc and clean it..I used a Scotchbrite pad to do mine. There is probably corrosion on the disc that won't let the motor get energized properly. Or you might have to pull the headlight switch and check it for proper operation. There are plastic tabs on the back of it to release it from the dash...HTH some..
