Anyone else bought "Porsche 924 / 944 Tech Tips" by George A. Hussey ?
The book is handy, but I found it lacking some obvious tips.
From what I have found, the most common "superficial" problems on the 944 are:
* the odometer gear disintegrating
* the heater flap plastic thingy cracking
* the rear hatch not seating correctly from seized latches
* the instrument lights going dim from faded reflectors
NONE of these are mentioned in the book ! ...strange considering the author is an "expert" on 944's with years of experience.
My apologies to the author if I missed them.
In fact, the book says under tip # 223 - "If the odometer has stopped working but the speedometer still operates, the head needs rebuilding."
Also, under tip #188 he says "If the heat is constantly on in your '85 1/2 - '91 944, check vacuum to the heater control valve when the car is running. If vacuum is present, the valve is bad."
That's just bad advice, no ? I'd hate to see someone replacing a heater control valve when the cuprit is a $1.25 plastic clip on the control flap /door.
I'd still recommend the book, it does include info I have not seen anywhere else. I just found the glaring omissions odd.

Actually the clip costs $2.02 at your local Porsche dealer.
Funny, I consulted my Tech Tips book and found nothing on the subject. Lucky a friend suggested I check the clip.
A local shop was more than willing to replace the control valve, and the climate control module, without mentioning the clip.

I haven't read the book, nor have I had any of the problems you mentioned. Well, my instrument lights may be dim... but, that happens with age (know it too well <sigh>).
