Life With Porsche 944 Street/Track FULL REBUILD
#17
The pistons are way too small for modern levels of response and are not properly digressive, which means they will not produce the grip increases that modern, big-diameter piston shocks provide. The ability to handle relatively high spring rates creates a good, cheap solution for a track car. But, the damping characteristics and stiction inherent in these old designs can produce a pretty uncomfortable ride on the street, even with relatively low-rate springs, and can actually cause a reduction in grip at street speeds on a bumpy road. High spring rates and high damping rates from old shock technology put together generally produce a horrible ride and poor grip on the street.
With more modern high-pressure monotube double-adjustables (Penske, Ohlins, MCS, JRZ, etc.) you can have a nicely compliant street ride when adjusted soft and great performance for autocross or track when adjusted stiff. But, then you are talking starting about $4K. KW V3 stuff is somewhere in the middle price-wise, have more adjustability and might be a good compromise, but I have no personal experience with them.
My street-class autocross 944 has Porsche/Koni M030 front struts revalved and modified by Koni from single to double-adjustable. These are also old "hydraulic" low-pressure shock technology from the '80's like the above. Since it has no insert, it uses the stock piston diameter which is bigger than the small one they have to put into the strut inserts. It's not too bad on the street even with the damping set pretty stiff (so the car will transition quickly.) An adjustable Tarret front sway bar set moderately stiff also helps a lot with transitioning, because this old tech cannot produce the high levels of compression damping at low shaft speeds necessary to make the front end dart like a squirrel like modern stuff can. I have to use the stock M030 springs to be legal, so the spring rate is low compared to a track/race car, however.

Made first carbon fiber headlight covers[/QUOTE]
Would you make these for others, looking for a right side (passenger side) to make with NACA duct for air to external oil cooler?
Thanks, Tom

Hi, Tom!
I think I can produce for other also, I need to modify mold for better results, but whei it could happen I dont know. I will let you know.

BUMP...Are you close to offering left side carbon fiber headlight cover and right side carbon fiber NACA duct to external oil cooler?
Very interested to modify my 944 Race Car to these mod's

Oh, sorry forgot about it actually, but time was spent on fender molds anyway. I could work on right side straight after. Thanks for reminding!
