Hooking up a 944S engine
A few weeks ago I bought a 944S with a blown engine, that was not in the car. I got a 1987 944S engine from a wrecking yard, and today we put the engine in the car. I have never seen a 944S engine in a car, so I am not sure how to hook up all the wires, and stuff. I think we have everything, and some of the stuff is obvious, but some is not. Could someone with a 944S please take a couple of digital pictures, and send them to me at BillLSeifert@aol.com. It sure would be a big help.
That brings up one question. When I went to hook up the reference sensors, it looks like one of the places to put them is too short. I called a mechanic friend, and he said he thought the S only used one sensor, not two like my 83 8v. I called the wrecking yard where I bought the engine, and he wasn't sure either. The mechanic said the space next to the place for the one sensor, the short one I was telling you about, was where you hook up the engine checking computer. (Whatever the heck that thing is called.) As you can tell, I'm kind of confused, so any help will be appreciated.

Pete and Ethan,
I am not sure the 944S2 would work, I will ask around. The pictures on Ethans, were very clear, but I am not sure about the connections I need. I will print them out, and see, I'll let you know. Thanks fellas.

I don't think the engine harness is different (944S v 944S2)
yup, the S has only 1 sensor instead of the 2 on 8 valve 944. Same place on the bellhousing and is used for both the (tdc) timing and (rpm) speed. (There might be a 2nd short sensor back there for diagnostics.)
The 16v also has 2 knock sensors under the intake manifold and needs the hall effect sender behind the cam belt gear to work properly...else the engine will default to 'retard' the spark.
That websight has great info including a massive PDF file on the 16 valve.

See under 'Tech Info'...but that PDF is HUGE !
