Unhappy Spare Wheel Pump

I have a picture in a Haynes 944 workshop manual (not very comprehensive but all I could buy locally) of a pump for the collapsable spare wheel.
It looks like it connects to the cigarette lighter, did these come as standard equipment or are they an after market part?

Many cars are missing the pump -- as well as the toolkit. You can find both on eBay and at dismantlers fairly frequently.

The pump is a pretty rare item on eBay. I got one from Crescent City Porsche a few years ago. Check with them, if they can't help, e-mail me and I might make you an offer on one that I have.

I have a generic pump that plugs into the cigarette lighter. It was only a couple of bucks a few years back.

Yeah, as noted they were a standard part of the tool kit that are frequently stolen by previous owners. If you are not requiring Porsche only parts in your car, just get an aftermarket pump.

The thing I would be more concerned about is whether the collasped spare tire rubber on an '85 would ever reinflate and hold air after all these years. That rubber has to be hard as a rock.

Along those lines is it a good idea to air up yhe spare from time to time. I know mine has never been in done in the 2+ years I have owned it. I don't think the PO ever did. The tread appears new. I don't know if it would hold air if I needed it.

Last summer I took my spare out and pumped it up. It sat that way in my garage for a few weeks and held the air fine. This rubber is 20 years old and the thread still looks brand new.

I actually had to use my spare not that long after I got the car. I was nerveous as all get out while driving and went real slow. I parked the car until I could get a new set of rear tires.

It would be nice to know if we can get new spare tires or not. I would be happy to invest in new rubber for the spare.
