Default Rear 6.5" speakers in a 1991 Car...

Hello all-

I'm pulling out some badly fitting Pioneer speakers that were put in the back and just want to drop back in some original 928 speakers I picked up used.

However, I am unsure of the wiring to the original speakers. The Pioneers that are back there now have just TWO wired connections. However, the old Blaupunkts I picked up appear to have FOUR possible connections.

Does anyone have an actual picture of what the wiring to the original speakers is supposed to look like?

Thanks

John

Hi John. The short answer is: Sorry, I do not.

However, I have had that system apart recently and reassembled an improved versions. The wiring diagram is more useful than a photo for any stereo work.

You may know all this but for background: The '91 stereo (and all years with 10-speaker systems) was closely integrated with a bespoke amp that powered two sets of two-way speakers and a set of two "bass" drivers, i.e. the 6.5" rears you are looking at. Stock installs have crossovers mounted on the 6.5 but not driving the 6.5, meaning: All the rear wiring appears to go through the 6.5 but actually does not. The crossovers also readily short out on the body due to tight clearance, and in general are a huge low tech nuisance.

I can't think of any reason but concours originality that merits reinstalling those rear speakers as they came from the factory. Many members have done some beautiful stereo upgrades. Many are practically invisible and have much, much better sound than the original.

Here's the diagram noting the wire colors and connections if you want to understand/reconstruct the originals:

Hey thank you for that.

I don't really want to go through the whole stereo upgrade deal (though there is a slightly upgraded Blaupunkt stereo in it I installed some time ago.

Without going through a million threads on this- are you aware of any speakers that can drop right in to those rear spots with good fitment AND function OK with the rest of the system (crossovers and all?)

Thanks in advance

IIRC those drivers have no crossover wiring - it's direct from the amp. The crossover is just bolted on for convenience(?).

These are what 2 PO's ago installed and they fit without shorting if you are careful:

They sound great but are NLA. I think most speakers would be an improvement over stock. Note they are 6 3/4", not 6.5". Note also that any change to the rear bass speakers requires hacking up the original mounts and reusing the part that converts the curvy panel profile to the flat speaker mounting.

Here's a component system that might work also. You can reuse or discard the tweeter:

Hope that all helps. Lots of stereo threads are here if you get stuck or need ideas.

The biggest issue with aftermarket drivers in this location is most are designed to use a sealed enclosure. The factory speakers were a very low impedance (2 ohm IIRC) and designed for "free air" installation i.e. no enclosure. Any driver that is designed for an enclosure if installed in this location (a "free air" mounting) will lack volume and punch. Better to disconnect the drivers that are there and install a subwoofer somewhere else like in place of the spare tire. I'm currently looking for one of the new powered subs that comes made in it's own enclosure with dimensions that will allow it to be mounted under the passenger seat.

Most component sets come with plastic mounting rings that you can cut and adjust so they fit behind the stock grills.

Most modern 6.5 drivers are designed for free air mounting so you should have a pretty great selection.

I'm using a set of Stereo Integrity TM65 MKII in my 81 for 6.5s. They are shallow and sound fantastic.

You will either need to use an active crossover network (what I am doing) or use some passive ones (3 way for the install in your 91 for subs, mids, and tweeters)

You should be looking at speaker sensitivity instead of resistance as that will dictate how loud they get per given watt. Plus the amp is 2 ohm stable so you can install almost any speaker without issue.

My rear pillar speakers are now holding Infinity Kappa 2-ways, grafted into the original housings with the original grills fitted. Took a bit of Dremel surgery and glue (construction adhesive...) to get the new drivers into the space where the originals lived, but the look is completely original and the sound is much better. The rear quarter speakers are disconnected -- no need to build a full soundstage behind the front seats. I'm running a Blaupunkt Alaska head unit with no additional amps, although I pulled all new wiring to the old amp location in case I change my mind and want to add a modern compact amplifier later. All the original wiring is undisturbed in case it needs to go back to stock later. It's just disconnected.

Recently i tried to improve the sound without big revolutions. I just pulled the original blaupunkt radio (bremen rcm43) and fitted a Becker Mexico pro cd. Then i put new pair of jbl gx 602 and 4 new midrange, a friend suggested cheap stuff like phonocar 66/121,telling that original amp can hand le those one with big esse and can sound good.

From original speakers and radio (that blaupunkt has got a great look, in a 928 Central console... But no good sound) that is a big improvement. Well starting from stock speakers, everything else is a big improvement... I am satisfied, anyway.

One of my next experiments will be buying a used set of rear speakers with the crossover included and trying to mount these in them in place of the current stock speaker:

There have been many discussions about the 2 ohm requirement and this might work ok. I'll do it around Christmas and post back...
