Need opinion - interested in '85 928 S
Hello everyone,
Looking for an idea of what the value of this 1985 with 96k miles should be from the experts. 5 speed guards red. Over all it needs some TLC and new paint but my worry is the engine. Saw under the hood, the power steering is leaking and a few oil leaks from looks like valve cover. Belts have not need changed and engine Copland looks to be crystallizing around the cooling neck on the block. I have been into Porsche a long time specifically with 944s. Asking price is $7500 with room to negotiate. Will I be sinking money into this? What else should I look for? She started up the first try and he stated it is driveable. What do the experts think? I have wanted a 928 for some time now but it looks intimidating compared to my 951...TIA.

Ask him to throw in the Jag and BMW at that price and it will be a deal!
Engine can be expensive to fix. But if it runs without any hint of belt breakage, start negotiation at $5k and work up. He asked for $8900 2 weeks ago.

If pulling the engine doesn't scare you as it will need the full reseal and MM's unless some of that was done in recent years, how's the clutch feel?
With Interior and paint you will be w/in the $15k plus purchase range you know. Guess it all depend on what you want it for and if you plan on keeping it for a while and driving it.
Does it have LSD, that would be a big plus too.
Good luck,
Dave

That sounds a little high for its condition, tbh.

Yes you will spend $$$ to r&r this car. How much pain are you up for? I would offer 5K, to start, but a few thousand negotiating will be forgotten if you want an '85 5-speed which I would think can be a treasure. It will also be small in comparison to the total depending on how much you can do yourself. If the coolant hasn't been changed regularly you are looking at head gasket. I had an '85 and I loved it.

It doesn't have the "protective body side moldings."
Look around at a bunch of pics of 928s. Many have a narrow strip along the side at the widest spot.
They absorb the door ding instead of the door itself (not that the dents are any prettier in them than the door).
They are commonly called "rub strips" and are considered by many to be unattractive.

WJ,
Not the reason I asked the question.
I was implying what had been done to this car so that the rub strips had been deleted.
To me that indicates at least a re-spray. But from the rest of the appearance wondering why someone would spend the extra money for the rub strip delete?
Possible accident damage then?

Since you're in the 944 community you probably are also well-aware of another significant cost to refresh/repair/restore a Porsche.... and that is "down-time".
I've found the down-time to be the biggest frustration about the 928... waiting for parts, waiting for machine shops, waiting, waiting. Before I became senile I believe I was impatient.

This fall I will have a very well sorted and documented 85 for sale. Needs nothing, and could drive from coast to coast and back again, at 120 mph all day long.

Looks like clear coat peel on fender.
Guards red is supposed to be single stage.
Looks like the beginnings of another long, costly refurb of a cosmetically neglected, worn car.
The deep mechanicals can easily be solid on one of these, that's pretty common, but this one looks like it lived as a neglected driver.
Its all the periphery stuff, electrical, cosmetic and engine seal/accessory stuff that is never ending. They tend to be more complicated than the 951 and the knowledge doesn't transfer well, so its a complete new "learn".
For it to be a value to me it would have to be sub-5K
Consider Ed's garnet red 85 instead.
