Default 4-Speed Auto Shift Points

I know this subject has been discussed many times here, but in the searches I've done there was either not a lot of consensus on shift points or the topic was focused on one or two shift points only.

Having just recently gotten my 1984 928S running for the first time since I've owned it and having never driven a 928 before, I wanted to get some feedback on what I am seeing with my shift points to see if they are "normal" or not.

I went out at lunch today and found a deserted stretch of road and recorded the following data. All of this was done from a standing start.

In addition to this I did a kickdown test at highway speeds. Traveling at about 65 mph in 4th gear I am turning 2100 RPM. Mash the gas to activate the kickdown and it only drops one gear into 3rd and rpm jumps to 3200 RPM. According to the owner's manual it should drop into 2nd gear below 70 mph. If I manually shift into 2nd gear I get 4200 RPM at 65 mph. At speeds higher than 70 mph when the kickdown is engaged it drops into 3rd gear as per the manual.

Seems to me it needs some adjusting. Thoughts as always are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Probably needs the cable tightened a bit to get it to downshift once on it's own without the kickdown and then it will downshift again with the kickdown activated to get to second from fourth.

Follow the WSM on how to do this and you should be fine.

This is also in the owners manual too IIRC.

I came across a GB post on how to do this. Very similar IIRC to what you are describing. I'll have to go back and review it. Looking at the WSM (at least section 37) it is very vague.

Here is what is in the '84 OM. Unfortunately no RPM vs. shift data for WOT application.
