Default Speaker Installation

Hi. I'm thinking about putting new 4inch speakers in my doors. Has anyone had any problems or is there anything I should be aware of ? i.e taking the door apart etc.

Thanks,

Unscrew the speaker grills - don't pry them
If I rememebr correctly you don't have to remove the door panel at all.

Greg, My speakers dont have grills. They are behind the door panel. I just dont want to screw something up. I think 84 and up had the speakers installed through the door and w/ grills.

Matt,

Check your PM. I sent ya a link that has how to take your door panels apart and not do damage or much. Use that with Nichols site. My speakers are behind the leather panels so you need to get to the back of the panel.

Matt the original speaker is very thin . You will probably not have enough depth for most speakers to be mounted in the stock location . Take it apart and carefully measure before buying speakers .

Does anyone have a link to a speaker replacement pictorial? Specifically the rears on an early model.

TIA

Thanks Tom! Let me know when you're at it. All i have found so far is a couple os half mumbled references like, "Remove the two screws at the base, then the hidden screws, then remove the seatbacks..." Not very enlightening.

The PO/Butcher of my car actually cut away at part of the inner door metal in order to accomodate some larger speakers, and made a real mess of the door panels. I've remade on of them in the orignal style (pre two speakers) on one side, but I havent done the other yet.

Further to the shoehorning of speakers into the car, I used to have a sub in mine, but took it out - because i couldnt hear the engine! At the moment i've got a very agreeable 4 speaker set up, though i may connect my rear ones up again at some point.

All I can say is the speakers are swallow so don't buy any until you figure out what works.

One other tip is if you have the orginal leather/vinal holes with the speaker behind it. You must be careful when you put the panel back on it and pushing on the plastic snaps. Your thumb pressing the snap could tear your panel. Use the your palm or something flat like a small piece of 2/4 with so your fingers don't tear into that speaker area.

Otherwise after all your work you might damage that fragile area and kick yourself in the *** right as your finishing the project.

I'll be documenting my rear quarter area this weekend. I plan to keep the interior original. If they are original 20 year old panels these things get very weak with age. Becareul popping them off and be gentle and becareful of the gorilla style of taking these apart. The plastic tabs are sometimes stronger then the fiberboard panel and you could pull out part of your door panel. Especially on older sharks.

Has anyone used the Crutchfield speaker suggestions when purchasing? They have a couple offerings for front and back, but I'm not sure how accurate they are.

I have used Crutchfield in the past with good luck. But it was in the past and not on the 928. Upstanding service with competitive pricing.

Red,

Nice web page. I don't think anyone has done fender replacement and wheel painting yet. Nice resource.

Find the speakers you like on crutchfields site and then do a search on ebay. You would be suprised on the price difference. Crutchfield is very proud of there prouducts. I chose The Blaupunkt TSx352 for the front and Blaupunkt TSx402 for the rear. They sound great and fit perfect. I also chose the Blaupunkt Tampa Bay receiver and for some added bass i chose the Infinity Basslink Powered Subwoofer. The whole system sounds great together. all for under 500.00
