George,
Wow...I'm shocked to hear that...let us know what you find out. I need to replace mine as well but not as quickly as you will need to do it.
Best regards,
Tim

George,

If I can get one (Gotta check price) , can you drive the car to Cumberland for the install?

Well it looks like no one has the glass available. One of the local shops did an area search and the galss is not available. The Porsche dealer can order the glass at a cost of $1,037.24 plus installation. Fortunately I have insurance so it will only cost $250.

It seems the glass has always been available in the past, but sometime last year Porsche stopped making the glass available to the aftermarket. Sounds kind of selfish if its true.

Greg, any day but Tues or Wed of this week. Let me know that would be great.

For the rest of you, even Legacy Glass can no longer provide the windshield. Looks like we are stuck amongst ourselves, one of the Big 3 can order direct from Porsche, but the freight companies charge may be too high, and the last resort is the dealer.

George, I went through this problem over a year ago, everyone was giving me the names of glass companys to call for a fair price, it turned out that quite a few of them did say it was available so an appointment was set up for the installation, I then would get a call back an hour or so later with them telling me "well it's listed in the computer but it's no longer available"
I ended up getting it from the Dealer, $700 after a $200 PCA discount, this did not include the $125 for the install!

I had my source look into a 86 and 88 model windshield. After some research, it was determined that both were NLA. (PPG glass)

BUT- I ordered and received ($570.00 cash) a windshield for my 86 back in July from Safelite glass corp. 1-800-800-2727. I did not check with them today, it might be worth a call.

BTW, the auto glass service business pricing is a racket. Pricing varies widely depending on which insurance company you have, no insurance cash customer, etc. My windshield retailed for 1,074.00. If I had insurance, there would have been a percentage off depending on which insurance co I had. Percentages vary from 25-45% off list. Cash customers fair better.
The real money is made on the insurance work.

George, wish I could help. When I told my source about how hard the windshields were to get this summer, he seemed to think that they could be found, and that I over-paid for mine. I put him to the test today. His computer showed that 88 models were NLA and 86 models were available, but when he called the distributer, they were all gone. My source will be painting my car over the winter and installing my new glass at that time. Geesh, I hope he doesn't break it!!! I'm going to try and keep the old one as a spare if he can get it out in one piece.

I wonder if a pre-paid group order to PPG or another manufacturer could result in a small production run? Maybe a 928 Intl. (west coast supply for pick-up) and 928 Specialists (east coast supply for pick-up) opportunity.

I think the Sigla glass is still available, just takes a bit of work to track down. I had one installed a couple of months ago. Seems like the price was just over $500, then another $700 or so in parts and labor. I had all the metal trim replaced and added the newer rubber inserts on the left and right. Let me know if you want to call the lady that tracked mine down. I don't think she would mind telling you what distributor she used.

huskydog,

This post is from your other glass thread.

Just a thought here.....is there a price difference between a 928 glass with the antenna as to the glass without? If there is, this might be an opportunity to upgrade to a rooftop antenna.

I installed a rooftop antenna in my S4 and I love how it looks, particularly with the aero mirrors.

If there is a price difference of $100 or more then you are getting this antenna mod for free.

May be you can check on the availability of an older glass (if it will fit) without antenna, and then do the rooftop mod?
