There's no way to get it in something very light and then dye it?

The real question is "what does it have to be made out of?" When you realize that it can probably be made out of just about any material from a bed sheet to cow hide, the choice of color, and pattern for that matter (how about Pasha), then becomes infinite.

he can make it in almost any color,

I was able to convince a local-at-the-time seamstress/craftsperson to remake my original. The fabric that was used originally stretches front-to-back but not side-to-side. So while Sunbrella or similar awning canvas looks great, it fails the stretch test. If that stuff is important to you. She found the fabric in a closeout bin at a local Joanne's Fabric store, with no label unfortunately.

From experience, using anything light-colored means you'll see it reflected off the rear window when you look in the mirror. The satin black color happens to match the black with cashmere seats and carpet in my car, so I lucked out. When I first got the car I was ready to buy a whole classic gray interior from Mark and swap it in, but the cashmere has grown on me after 20 years. Meanwhile, the black cargo cover has been in the car about 6 years or so now, holding up fine. The seamstress has been moved to a senior care home, and out of business.

It's nice that you can turn around and be assured that you are driving a PORSCHE. Or, you can look into the rear view mirror and wonder what an EHCSROP 4S 829 is.
You need to adjust the rear view mirror higher to see the the prius tailgating you.

Did you have to send him your old one as a core?

Think cloth type awning material,
the lighter colors might have see through from the application of the artwork.

So you might just go for a basic cover with no artwork in any color you like.

I paid 350.00 this included shipping and the artwork.

NOTE this part is plug and play , unwrap it and a few twists and its on.
NOTE if you have weak hatch struts now is when you will find out you need to replace them

No. He sells them as a complete installation.

He had a thread on here a while back about them, but it seems to have been deleted ('not a sponsor, no advertising' rule apparently).

For those of a more DIY attitude, there's a nice thread with materials lists and dimensions for making your own. I did this and it turned out pretty nice. Maybe $50 in vinyl, aluminum channel and the "bobbins" from 928 International.

If you are looking for Rich, he posted on that thread (2nd page).

Here is the one that came with mine...matches the interior leather. White Zipper down the middle so you can fold down one rear seat back and cover it. All the right fittings, so it might be factory.
Sadly its a bit water damaged on the right - stored inside a spare bathroom to keep it out of the Saudi sun, there was plumbing failure that produced a small flood!

Can anyone advise me on the particulars of how the OB covers may be different than later models? Maybe there's no difference at all? I'd to get an OEM-spec version recreated for my early '78.

78-79 is very different. There's no stretch cords that pull them open with the hatch, they only snap into place on the rear seats and tool tray area. Material is different too..kind of fuzzy velvety feeling stuff, with a certain backing. Pattern is different, a few weird curves around the tops of seats. Best thing to do is find one...even a shredded POS..then you can at least have it copied correctly.
