Question CV Bolt Hole Mystery... Why????

Rebuilt my axles for the '78 and put the gold cups on both ends to minimize the mess when re-installing.

There were only cups on the tranny ends when I removed them. Now I know why. The bolt holes on the wheel flanges are not centered with the indentations.

The bolt holes in the gold cups don't line up-

The bolt holes on the tranny flanges ARE centered with the indentations and the holes in the cups line up ok.

What the $&%* were they thinking?? What possible reason would Porsche have for drilling the wheel flange holes off center???

Wild guess, here. So forgive me if I'm wrong, but I suppose they did it so one could only put the axles in one way. I know, I should be out doing something with my life.

1 thing you can do it to correct the hole in the plate, or you can take a grinder and cut the excess material off, making the holes centered

Looks to me like a manufacturing error.

I've never heard of this issue before. I checked the PET and it lists only one CV joint for the axles, not inside/outside versions.

Here's a guess: they got these messed-up ones and realized that they could be used on the outsides just fine and did that.

With their attention to detail and quality control it doesn't seem likely Porsche would mis-drill two of them, go ahead and tap them and use them anyway. There must be a reason.

if there was a reason someone would have figured it out and they would have built different plates than you have there

also where di you order those plates from?

I have a pair of LH and RH door window nylon pieces, but they are both moulded with the same part number. How did they get out the door?

Dremel to the rescue! I had already glued the cups onto the axle ends. It didn't take long to relieve those flanges a bit and round off the corners. Everything fits now. The gold cups came with CV boot kits.
