Default Installing rear bumper beading?

Any good tips or DIY's?

I'm putting the painted bumper back on and need to install the new beading. Looks like it was original stapled on, but I don't think I have an industrial stapler like that

Anyone have success with another method or tips?

Thanks!

I used my standard staple gun with the shortest staples I could find. The staples ended up being too long and I needed to work on folding back the staples with pliers. Not a perfect job if you disassemble and look but externally the bead came out perfect.

I considered glue and caulking but didn't think they would hold on the rubber beading of plastic bumper. If I ever have to replace the bead again I would experiment with barbed retaining clips.

I have this Porter Cable upholstery stapler, it will drive staples into everything short of solid steel:

Amazon Amazon

I would also recommend stainless staples.

find 1/4 inch staples without the slant chisel ends.
NOTE This end this will drive the legs in opposite directions as they are driven into the PU ,
and it could cause the staple to come out of the surface this will damage the paint.

I use an Arrow J 21 stapler find SS staples made by Stanley then use a 3/8 drive extension with mallet to seat the staples after you have put them in the stapler will not drive the staple fully home

I ended up using a cheap air-stapler from Harbor Freight. It worked fine for both my front and rear bumper covers. The stapler broke literally on the last staple so I just took it back to Harbor Freight for a refund.

A body-shop friend had some concerns that the staples might split or damage the edge of the old bumper covers if they had become brittle with age, but mine came out fine.

I think I recall there was a thread on Rennlist about someone experimenting with a flexible adhesive to essentially glue it in place. I seem to recall they had good results but cannot recall the thread. It was a within the past few years I believe. You may want to search the forums.

Huh. The beading for my old front bumper was stapled on, but the new beading had a self-adhesive strip, so I didn't use staples. I assumed a previous bumper repair had used the staples rather than new beading. Is the adhesive going to fail? Is the beading going to wander off?

It would depend on the adhesive used. The 3M stuff is strong enough to hold on body trim if properly used.
