Default Virus Warning (No Joke)

I was sent an E-mail which I believe originated from someone using of one of the 928 lists (OC or Rennlist, not sure which).

The e-mail came from:
Theodor Chen - tedebearp@gorge.net

This address was in the text of the e-mail.
Djdawson2@aol.com

This was the subject line:
Re: [s-cars] RE: Riff's dyno #s

This was the attached virus which hotmail has no cure for:
W32/Bugbear.b@MM Virus Found

This was the body of the message:

JE,

I've also gotten this virus attachment from both Rennlist pseudo names and BMW list pseudo names, so it appears the real spreader is on both. You can't go by the name listed as sender as the virus can use any name in the infected machines address book.

It is really a shame that this virus has gone on so long without being detected by the true sender. There are excellent and free antivirus software programs available on the net but they must be installed and updated frequently to work.

Thanks for the heads up.

Dennis

While all the so called protection I've loaded this year has done it's job, and well I might add, some of these viruses and trojans modify themselves beyond loaded protection.
Spyguard, Spybot, and most of my Symantec stuff actually contributes to the problem after a bit. Yep the firewall, homepage protector, and identity swapper all got flogged this last month. The Norton stuff with updates was plundered as well. A secure back-up is a must, and there is always a safe disk for rebooting/cleaning up the system.
I lost audio last month and even f-disk and reload hasn't facilitated a return
also lost ability to defrag - and there in is where I think the culprit lays.
Downloaded some Avg stuff to disk and did a wipe got rid of aforementioned virus/trojan but still no audio and can't find any damaged/missing dlls even using MS patch downloads...
Ahh the benefits of the computer age.

Cool #@$%@!!!%% VIRUS

What were the symtoms of the virus you got?

I just put one of my computers in the shop after Norton couldn't find any virus and my machine kept crashing and playing a funeral march. May the perpetrator eat exlax for one month!!

Anyway, the computer shop is still at it and searching.

Multiple symptoms, jumps from one to the other. Sometimes retaining original glitch, somtimes just moves on to something different.
Glitches:
Lost audio.
Slow cursor movement/reaction -delay-.
Slow type script
Hidden typed script -then appears in a clump -delay-
Single attacks on homepage -attempted change-.
Multiple attacks on homepage.
Page lock-up.
Link lock-up.
E-bay item lock-up.
No error indicated - Program not responding -.
Garbage can won't empty.
Scan disc runs out side of schedule while on the net.
Start button won't respond.
Mouse cursor freezes up.
Back button inop.
Transient Gambling/East European **** site load ups to docs., startup, auto loads to cookies, history, temp internet files, Temp., program install removal program.
When above loads prepare for overlaping page loads with jumps to key pages while deleting, and reloads till system locks.
Frozen 'SETTINGS" page.
Scroll freezes.
Total memory useage till lock-up -like being nuked-.
DLL file deletes
ad nauseam......
Then there's the AOL chat line crap like AIM, Gator that goes crazy -I tend to wipe the whole AOL load list as it used to clear all of my problems, of course my daughter hates me until she reloads...

John,

Sounds like you could actually have a hardware problem or a very malicious virus that I haven't heard about. Have you tried downloading and running AntiVir or used the free on line scanning sources?

Most of those symptoms are occuring on another of my computers and have been doing it for some time. I put up with it because it is only a back up machine. Now I'm using it because my other machine is down. I tried Norton but it scanned for 3 hours and then said no virus was found. So much for Norton, which also causes my autocad programs to close. Mostly irritating are the constant error messages or the illegal operation messages. I guess the computer repair guy will be laughing all the way to the bank.

John

I found a good program that found the startup & auto load problems & other hidden stuff. When I posted the results of my PC scan to the suggested help forum I was supprised at the amount of spy stuff & informed of what to remove.

Try HijackThis
It worked for me after Norton/spybot/adaware etc could not find anything.

Good luck.
