I had not filled my car since November. I had crack on the interior and exterior of the cap. I was shocked at the condition of the cap when I pulled it this afternoon. Now I am concerned that I have another issue other than just needing a new gas cap. I also don't want to ruin a nice gas cap. I have been smelling gas around the rear of the car, but not anywhere else. I assume this gas fumes have caused this severe, rapid deterioration. Should I be concerned with another venting issue? Is this typical?
Gasoline didn't do that! What's the rest of the car look like?
It's not "what does it look like," it's what's it going to look like!". at least that's what I tell myself.
The car is pretty rough. The cap was rough when I got the car, but I could get a seal, at least up until last spring. I'm just shocked how quickly it's condition worsened.
That kind of corrosion just doesn't happen in gasoline that quickly. Even in a humid environment it won't corrode like that. Something else is going on.
Somebody trying to sabotage your ride?
I would recommend getting a cheap boroscope and looking down the filler neck and seeing how bad that section is.
A couple of years have passed, and I REALLY want one of these real aluminum caps for my 992. I see that it is still available here in the US. However, the fitment tab on the FVD Brombacher website claims it fits only up to a 1998 911. Does anyone know if this is also compatible with the 2023 Carrera?
Thanks!

I'm pretty sure you'd have no luck using a cap from a 928 on either a 911 or 992.
Wildly different gas tank neck than any other car, from all I've seen. Posted in the wrong sub forum?
