Swapped out the trans in my 89 with a used one. Every thing went better than expected. Took my time and didn't break anything.
Any way I fired it up to fill with trans fluid, I'd already changed the rear gear oil with Mobile 75w90 LS. Ran great, pumped in 8 quarts total, let it run on the lift, ran it thru all the gears, reverse, ran it up to make sure it was shifting up and down as it should. And let it run in gear on the lift for about a half hour.
Lowered it to the ground, to take it for a test drive. It rolled down the driveway under it's own power, and as soon as I started to accelerate, it starts making a scraping sound.
I'm deaf, but I can hear it. Sounds like it's coming from the back of the car. The torque tube bearings looked ok from what I could see when the trans was disconnected from it, and it never made any noise before.
as a matter of fact the trans I replaced, never made a sound before it quit.
My son says, it sounds like a bolt rattling around. To me it sounds like some thing scraping sheet metal.
I didn't mess with changing the torque converter bearings, as the replacement trans felt fine when I turned it by hand.
FWIW, the replacement shifts very smooth, like it should. No problems there.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
thanks, joe

Is it possible that one of the rear flex plate bolts didn't get torqued down and is rattling around in the bell housing? Had the local Porsche dealerships diagnose a '91 as a failed transmission and they wanted huge $$ for it. Guy had it brought here, found 2 bolts bouncing around, replaced all of them and he was quite happy.

Don't go yanking it just yet. There are access holes for those bolts. See the pic. Pull the plugs and rotate the engine to get all 6 of them.
