Hi Ed,
Your link leads to the 911.
Here is the correct link, I think...

I get everything but the Gen 1 boxster. I agree the Gen 3 is a great ride but the gen 1?
No doubt the 928 belongs amongst the others they were really ahead of their time.

Not to mention it ushered in a new era for Porsche. The first mid-engine roadster since the 50's or 60's?
Over the last few years I know a few Porsche peeps who otherwise never gave the Boxster the time of day, have picked one up because they are so cheap. All of them have marveled what a great car they are, even the "under-powered" non-S. One friend has a hard top and snow tires on his, drives it year round. Calls it his "beater Boxster" in daily driving he's averaging about 35mpg.

IMO I think the simplicity of the design, light weight, size etc.... it's a very underappreciated car.

Sorry.... "The first mid-engine roadster since the 50's or 60s that wasn't a re-badged Volkswagen"
Better?

I used to play around with Ferrari 360's on Pikes Peak, and they would smoke me in the straights, but as soon as it got to tight turns, I would catch back up.
Totally underrated car for the money. Got 30 MPG wherever I went.

I bought a 1st gen Boxster and love it. I paid 10k for mine and it was in a rare color with 55k miles in concours condition. What it lacks in straight line speed it makes up for in corners. If you were the better driver on super tight twisties, you could beat anything except a spec racecar, because it was mid-engined and weighed 4 pounds.

Cobalt, I agree. My brother who was three years ahead of me had a 1970 914-6 that he bought working at the PGA event in Tucson circa 1977. He sold it for about $400 more than he bought it for, but before his senior year in college, he had an internship in Baton Rouge. I would drive it every two weeks that summer, still one my favorite sports cars, probably top five, but because it was a go cart.

A bone stock 914 was never a capable daily driver like the Boxster is. I took my fathers Boxster S on a few road trips and no matter how "nice" a 914 is, there is no comparison.
Cargo space, comfort, reliability, track fun etc.... it's such an all around great car I am not surprised to see it on this list.
As for a well setup 914.... do the same mods to a Boxster. It's a better more modern platform no matter how you shake it and bringing the 914-6 into this discussion, we might as well discuss my friends Boxster with a warmed over 996 engine installed, or an LS transplant.
I'm just surprised to hear someone as well versed in all things Porsche as yourself failing to appreciate what a great car the 1st gen Boxster is.
