Metal Gas Cap Pawl Available for 928
Most of you know that the Gas Cap for the 928 is unique, both among Porsches, but apparently also among automobiles generally. At least I am unaware of any other gas cap that will substitute. Many of you also know that your gas cap can no longer be secured because it always ratchets in the install direction and unscrews in the remove direction, no matter which position the key/lock is in.
That, of course, is because the ratcheting pawl inside, which is made of plastic, or perhaps Nylon, has broken. Fortunately it breaks in the "open-and-close" position rather than in the "secured" position. Therefore, if you wish to return your gas cap to the original-like condition you must replace the broken ratcheting pawl.
I have fabricated some of then out of a very high number aluminum alloy (7075 T651), and they are now available to 928 owners worldwide. They are $30 each, and I will pay the postage to mail them domestically. I will also mail one or more of them in one package out of the country for a $5 contribution toward the postage.
I use paypal, mostly, at jfeather@bresnan.net.
P.S. When I complete the Gas Cap Separating Tool I will try to figure out a good method to provide an inexpensive or even free program for owners to use the tool to take their caps apart. One way that is most likely to happen is to have you send me your cap which I will separate and return with a new pawl. You can then clean up, maybe re-key, and put it back together. You will pay the postage for that. Another way may be for the tool to be available a few places around the world for use in place or for loan to near-by locations. (One will be at 928 International in California, for example, for use in place, but which will not be loaned out from there.)
Whether I or anyone else offers any kind of disassembly, clean-up, install, and reassembly service, for a charge, remains to be seen. Re-keying in the middle of that may become fairly complex. More about that as it may develop.

Hi Mike. For the time being I think what I will offer to do is have you send me your cap and $40 and I'll take it apart, clean it up and install and lube the new pawl, then I'll mail it back. I think it might be wise for me to send it back with the red part still off the whitish part in case you need to do anything about re-keying it, or if you simply would like to check what I have done with the Pawl. I think I can work with it without the key, since I have found that usually one of my own keys will work in a cap.

Thanks, Guys. I put those in the mail in small padded envelopes. They should be there shortly. I also sent them with a tiny tube of grease that you can use to lube them and the cap when you put it back together.
Here are a couple of pictures of the Pawl as machined, but before I do any hand finishing to deburr the edges. When I do that they kind of loose their crispness and then the edges photograph kind of sparkly, moreso than they look in real life.

Thanks for the interest, Guys. These are "back in stock!" After the first "rush" on these from the long list of interested parties I had compiled, I received Randy's cap(s) to fix and have shipped two others, one to Canada. Then, while I was waiting on some new tooling to finish up the three point gas cap separating tool, and since I was in the mood and had the mill set up I started another batch of these. I am now at the last step with those and have about a hundred to go with drilling the spring hole in the back. Then I will have just over 500 of these little buggers which will likely be all that I will ever have to make.
The deal is still the same. $30 shipped to domestic locations. Add $5 for foreign mailing by first class mail. That comes out about the same since the one I sent to Canada cost $9.50. I expect more to other countries.
I did offer to one guy, if the gas cap tool works out, to receive his gas cap and fix it and return it domestically for $40. I think I will still do that offer for anyone interested. I can probably turn one or more around in a day or two, unless I am gone, but I don't travel much these days.

Or, send me the address and I'll put one or more in the mail and you can send me a check.

Here is the current line-up of Gas Cap Pawls. The jar on the left has the most recent 250 plus that I have just finished the final machining on. The next jug is the earlier batch, of over 250, that are finish machined, but not yet hand finished; the first baggie contains the ones I have hand finished; and the baggie on the right has the ones that I have further hand finished by slightly rounding the nose of the teeth on the ratcheting side for smoother ratcheting. They still need to be polished before mailing.
This is probably a lifetime supply of these since I doubt that I will ever need to make any more of these.
