Default Normal door locking behavior for '81 928

Just acquired my dad's '81 928, and I'm going through some much needed maintenance and learning about its idiosyncrasies... I couldn’t find an answer in the owner’s manual or Google for this question:

On the 1981 US-spec 5spd, if both doors are locked, and I pull on the inside door handle, the door will not open. I have to unlock the door before the inside handle works. This is true on both sides (passenger and driver). Is this normal behavior? My MBZ will always open the door from the inside, even if the door is locked. Don’t know if this is the way Porsche’s work or not. Just curious.

Thanks! I wasn't used to that (lock) behavior.
