Default ABS info needed for 84 Euro - warning light stays on

Hello

I'm trying to trouble shoot my ABS warning light staying on all the time for a 1984 Euro auto ...I have cleaned all four ABS sensors at the hubs but the ABS warning light is still on. I need to know which relay on the relay board is the ABS relay and also the relay number....Is there a fuse for the ABS as well???

Again this is for a '84 EURO car which probably some different relays than the US cars....The US cars had no ABS in 1984...ABS became an option in 1985 for the US 928S....

I would also like the ABS controller part number just to make sure the car has the correct ABS controller for a EURO car...It's possible that the previous owner installed the wrong ABS controller.

Thanks VK

VK,
Her you have the needed info:
The Bosch number on my ABS unit: 0265 200 009
For the 1984 model the reley for ABS is no XI - This reley has a 10 A fuse on the top
There is good instruction in Shop Manual section 45
Did you check the ground to the ABS unit? - To be checked from the wheel base side
Also important to check all the wire-connections for the sensors.
Good luck!

At least 90% of all ABS problems are caused by the wheel sensors. There's a little sensor (not unlike a flywheel sensor) in each hub that keeps track of each wheel's rotation. When a sensor has a problem, it lights up the ABS light in the cluster.

So I bet one (or more) of your ABS wheel sensors is loose or damaged.

Thanks guys:

Brian - I took out all four (4) sensors from the wheel hubs and cleaned them....They were dirty with metal shavings the magnets pick up inside the hub......All 4 sensors looked fine to me but I don't know how to test them out of the car (maybe someone else can post something here)....The wiring to all 4 sensors looks good....Nothing is broken or cut..The ground connection inside the left front wheel well was cleaned and looks good as well....I'm not an expert but the sensors look fine to me with no signs of damage.

Erik - are you sure the ABS relay on your relay/fuse board has a fuse on top of the relay??? Am I understanding your post correctly??? I have never seen a relay like this...If that's the relay I should have for my ABS then I don't have it....
Can you please post the part number of the ABS relay itself and maybe a photo of your relay board for reference since the EURO cars have different relays.....Maybe others with EURO cars can benefit from this info.

Thanks again for your time.

Thanks Erik, you are a lifesaver!!

I didn't mean to doubt your post, but I have never seen a relay like it much less an ABS relay (I have 2 different ABS relays for US cars and none of them has a fuse on top).....

Anyway, I DON'T HAVE this ABS relay on my car....I have nothing in that slot - it's EMPTY! How can I can a used one???? It will be difficult if not impossible to get one here in the US....Do you have any used 928 parts sources in Denmark??

Thanks again - Vasilis

VK,
Happy I can help you!
That strange you said 84 Euro then you should have this
Maybe your car is a 85 Euro then look at the copy I sent you up-right 'Geanderte Ausfuhrung' = Changed layout - (Model 85 to 89) Reley no XVII - From the 85 model the fuse is not longer in the relay but is a normal 10 A fuse placed as no 16
From model 90 the relay is no XV and fuse no 28
Hope this help you

VK,
See the attached chassis code, if you have 'F' your car is a 1985 model!
Lucky man, then you have a newer car (S3), with the S4 brakes etc.
See: http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/chassis_no_code.jpg
Porsche starts production of the next years model Sep/Oct, and if your car is registrated in Europe end of 1984 and later exported to the USA the papers shows 84 model, but the car is actually a 85 model.

Erik thanks for the quick response...

No, this is a 1984 Euro model (no S4 brakes)...The VIN is WPOZZZ92ZESxxxxxx

I hate to be a pest and ask the same question again, but I need specific information on YOUR car (if you have a 1984 Euro), not what the manual says.....I need the location of the ABS relay in YOUR '84 Euro as well as the part number on it.....Please don't send photos of what the manual says (I can't read Danish anyway).

Below is a couple of photos of the relay board and computers (in my '84 Euro)....If you have photos of your relay board that will be great!! Otherwise the relay location will be fine.

The '85 EURO doesn't have the S4 brakes, either...

If you need it - I have a spare ABS computer for $100. I bought it from 928 Specialists, and then ended up not needing it, because I upgraded to the Big Black Brembos...

Thanks for your offer Mark

I do have the ABS computer (the Bosch computer found on the driver's side foot well under the instument panel)....

What I need is the ABS relay for the Euro cars...I'm not sure of the actual part number but I think the ABS relay (for 1984 Euro cars) was different than the ABS relay found on the US cars fitted with ABS (85-86 models)....

Maybe you or anyone else have a Euro ABS relay for sale?

Thanks - Vasilis

Just before you blow some $$ on parts, go back to Bryan's post re. sensors.
This is the easiest and frequently most successful place to start. All the high speed crud lives around these sensors, so poor contacts/broken wires are not unusual - Remember, that over time, some of these fine wires, if improperly secured, can break within the insulation jacket --no visual!
Almost all of these sensors (ABS, Crank, etc.) are 'Hall Effect' probes - like a solenoid coil, a ferrous rod with thousands of turns of fine wire: apply a current to generate magnetism, or in this (ABS) case, coil near a rotating toothed wheel generates a pulsed elec. current to the delight of the ABS computer. Enough of that!!
Take your VOM and do a continuity check on each probe - do the same on each pair of leads back to the computer if the sensors are OK, etc.
If there is a concern about the relay, pull it and test for function w. a 12v jumper (pins 85/86 normally) and continuity thru 30/87 when energized.
Lastly (and perhaps should be first), do you have 12v at the computer?
If this fails, then go for the $$.

Many thanks to all of you (Erik, Mark, Garth, Bern & Bryan) for your timely response and suggestions to this all too common problem with the ABS warning light.....

Hopefully I will resolve this problem without spending much $$ on parts...I will post a solution when the problem is corrected..

Best regards to all

Vasilis
