How many 928 are left?
A few concepts collided in my mind and I would like to get the collective wisdom of the list on the following. What will the future hold for the surviving 928’s?
After reading Excellence 928 Market Review (how many years have they recycled that article) which states that they were only 25k 928 sold in the US during the entire production run. Combined with the fact that not a week goes by that I don’t see two or three 928 that are being parted out on rennlist or ebay. Eventually there will be only a few thousand left (if not already). Does anyone have any idea how many are still rolling, half, a third?
How long can/will the Big 3 exist with their consumer group shrinking by 2% or 3% a year, will they be forced to start supporting Cayenne’s? How long will after-market companies create filters, floor mats and exhausts systems? When will Porsche turn its back on us, they’ve stopped making engines, how long before they stop making gaskets and belts?
I love my car and enjoy working on it, but I’m having visions of an apocalyptic world where timing belts and window switches will be so scarce that they will sell for $250. Should I be buying up every part I see, because they’ll return more then the S&P 500? I saw a Delorean the other day, in pretty rough shape and though that this might be our destiny.

That's a very good question, and one that I've thought about quite a bit.
Frankly, I want to be on record as saying that I would be VERY HAPPY to hear that one or more of the Big Three [or Big 4 if you include John Speake in the UK] started carrying either Boxster or Cayenne parts. That means that their business will continue no matter what, and its likely that the 928 part won't disappear entirely.

I've had the same thoughts exactly. The Big Three are destined to have their businesses decrease as time goes on, so I hope they do start supporting other vehicles so they stay around (as long as the 928 remains their true love!).

You guys hit it on the head, but don't forget that all those Detroit muscle cars have vendors an supliers supporting them, I suspect there will be people who start making the parts we will need. don't worry. Be Happy! - Ruf

Well if you have a friend at the DMV they might be able to query the database for 'Porsche 928' and see how many matches they find. That would tell how many are registered, then divide that number to figure out how many a per year we are losing. I suspect now we will be seeing more and more parted out because the parts are so expensive.
