Default Can't find 16 inch tires

Is the tire selection for 16 inch wheels really as poor as it seems? I'm looking for 255/45-16 tires, and don't see them on the Tirerack website. I see 265's, but they are competition, and they are a bit wide for 9 inch rims. Does anyone know where to find a bigger selection of 16 inch tires?

Why are you looking for 255/45/16 tires? The standard size for the 16" rims are 225/50/16, and there's a fairly good selection of that size available.

Geez, try finding something fun in 15 inches!

They don't make every permutation of rim, width and aspect. Most people are interested in stock replacements and then "plus 1" and "plus 2" aftermarket tires and wheels.

Also, isn't it a 245/45/16 for the 8x16 rims? That is 225/50/16 for pre-S4 cars (7x16s), and then a pair of those and a pair of 245/45/16 on the rears for S4s (8x16s).

I omitted to say, that this is for the '89 GT. Rears are 245/45/16, stock.
Using the 1.15 rule, it should be admissable to fit tires as wide as 260's on 9 inch wide rims.

Glenn, thanks! You helped me answer my next question. Someone put 245/50/16 tires on the rear of the car I'm getting. I'm going to put those tires on the front wheels. This is going to be fun. 245's in the front. I wonder if there's anything wrong with doing that.

Checking out www.928gt.com and www.tirerack.com, I see your position and problem. Tire Rack has got Kumho Victoracers in 265/45/16 but nothing else in close combinations. Plenty of choices in 245/45/16.

Bernard,
I didn't realize that they were taller. I wasn't paying attention. Forgot that the diameter was related to the width. Oops. I guess I'll just wear the tires out and look for something else once they're dead. Thanks for the heads up. Really appreciate it. I never expected to learn something by asking such a lame question. Glad I asked.

Your questions was by far not a lame question, below are a few "lame"questions I quickly brainstormed.

IAG (It's all good)

Possible Lame questions

1. Is my 928 a Porsche
2. Should I put curb feelers on my car
3. What color fuzzy dice should I hang from my mirror?
4. Dude, is it a Porch
5. What do you think, would white walls look good?.
6. Are you a movie star?.

Okay, so Im bored and at work!

Oh brother. Curb feelers. You've got me laughing now. I actually saw curb feelers the other day. It's actually not a bad idea considering the cost of one Club Sport wheel is about a grand.
I'm still blown away by the thought of towing a trailer with this vehicle. I mean, why not tow a trailer with a Ferrari?

Thanks guys.

I did a Google and found people selling cars with 255/45/16 tires. Yoko, Hoosier, and Goodyear. It may be they are out there.

The dilemma is that, as much as I'd like a bigger diameter wheel (for tire availability), I would never remove the forged wheels on the GT. Sacrilege!

I'm really trying to take someone's mistake, putting a 245/50/16 on the rear, and use it up front. That tire has a diameter of 25.65 inches. The stock tire is 225/50/16 with a 24.86 inch diameter. That's a 4% difference. Quite a bit, but I still might stick it on for fun. It would make for less understeer. It would take some detective work before trying.

Looking for tires for my '73 Buick Riviera. Should have 225/75/15 tires. It currently has some worn 245/60/15 tires I got for "free" with the rims via eBay. That size is too large for the rims. I don't mind the lowering, though. I spotted some in 235/65/15 that Tire Rack lists as being for Bently and Rolls Royce. Yes, Buick is the American Bently, is it not?
