Hi guys,
For the first time in almost ten years my 928 left me stranded. I drove to work today and everything seemed fine. Car started easily as usual. Tonight, in the dark and cold it would crank strongly, but would not fire.
I pulled fuel pump relay XVII and jumped 30 to 87. I could hear the fuel pump running. Still no start.
The factory alarm system has been properly jumped for years and the jumper is in place.
Most recent work on car was me connecting and disconnecting the O2 sensor plug by the CE Panel.
I noticed that the Fuel pump relay has 31 and 31b terminals which I did not jumper.
I may even have a spare relay in the glove compartment, but it was too cold to keep working. I'll look tomorrow.
Any ideas for me to try and get this running. I will go back with a jump pack and try whatever you or I think of in the next day or so.
Thanks in advance,
Dave
What was the outside temp and was the car stone cold? I know you stated that you were short on time this evening, but, without having more specific details, it's hard to do much else besides guess.
Don't forget that you need a 3-way jumper for the AFC relay if you want to try that diagnostic. A temp 2 issue can definitely cause a no-start, though it will seem that the engine wants to start when it hits off the fumes.
See if it starts tomorrow when it is warmer. If it eventually starts after cranking for an eternity, it is your temp timer in the coolant bridge. Or you could test it the way the shop manuals outline it as well
It controls the cold start injector and if it has failed you will have very hard starts. I had this issue and replaced it a few years ago and the car starts easily when cold now.
Check small hot bat wire, if loose might be some voltage drop that prevents AFC relay from pulling in.
I've had the afc relay fail ( special, get right one --- I had substituted a higher amp version once that failed intermittently ). Cold start failure can result in no-start (stumble - no start in my case) at temps below 50 or so (ie, the TempTime switch ) --- apparently these are common failures in the Ljets.
Thanks guys. I will try jumping AFC relay today. I may have a spare FP relay to try, and I have a spare Temp 2 sensor. I will look at the connections to the thermo time switch as well.
Yesterday temp was 37* at night when it failed. Today might be a little warmer.
Dave
BTW looking at the wiring diagrams, it looks like the FP relay may need two jumpers: 30 to 87, and 31 to 31b. While the AFC relay looks like it just needs 30 to 87. I doubt both failed at once, but I do have plenty of jumpers.
Thanks for the great ideas.
