Have you ever had one of those things to do and thought you did it?
Second replacement transmission from the original and I thought I had filled the diff with gear oil. In fact, I did not. I had filled the 1st replacement transmission diff but not the second. I just really thought it had happened. This is yet another reason I don't work on airplanes.
Just in case anyone is ever tempted to drive without doing this, don't. Carrier bearing(s) seized in the hotel parking lot as I was pulling in. I'm actually surprised they lasted as long as they did without proper lubrication/cooling. I feel very lucky that it didn't happen on some of the shoulderless highway lanes that we traveled on at warp speed during this journey.
I'm also very thankful to have the camaraderie of the 928 group that were so helpful getting the GTS to a secure location (Tony77's shop for the night, and then onto a trailer for the trip home and on to BradW's house) You guys all know who you are.
Time and disassembly will tell the full tale of the damage.

It's hopeful we've contained the damage to the carrier/thrust bearings and the case and pinion bearing will hold up. Won't know until it's apart. If it's a pinion bearing, that means full tear down and refurb of that end, beyond my skill level. Then, pinion depth and backlash, which I can do ok with the right indicator.
Oh, and as far as 'man caves' go, I was in a very nice home with a fantastic view of the bay, and exceptionally clever and bright decorator touches. Thanks again Tony, it's a charmed place.

Congrats to the Newlyweds! - Looked like a great event and a really nice location you have there Tony! - it's too bad I couldn't get down there because of my surgery, maybe next year? Really liked the Man sachel/ bag fannypack, nice touch!

Tony, thanks for putting on another great Fling and for all your fine planning and hospitality. Sure is a nice getaway to come down to the coast and enjoy the area for a few days.
