Three 928 vehicles I happen to have laying around.
Hi all,
Apologies in advance for the length of this post, I'll try to be as concise as I can but I want to throw something open to the floor.
1: Desired future state - I own ONE (1) nice Porsche 928 with a view to maybe going forced induction at a later date.
2: Current state - three 928's , out of which none of them go.
Car one : 1982 ROW 1982S 5 speed manual with M28/11 Euro engine and mechanical fuel injection. Car is ruined. I got it as a wreck. I have not tried to start it. Car is complete but it's been hit from behind (rear fender is a bit bashed in), windows are all smashed apart from front screen and it was sitting in the elements for quite a while. I bought it cheap for driveline (maybe). Driveline is complete. No idea of history or anything. It doesn't have a battery in it. Motor appears to have oil in it. No idea about condition of box/clutch etc. Body screwed, paint screwed, interior screwed.
Car two: 1985 Euro with M28/22 EFI and three speed auto. Car has been sitting for 2-3 years. Previous owner had camshaft belt wheel thing let go and snapped end of (facing car) left hand bank camshaft. Twin dizzy engine. Left side cam stuff all off and removed. Needs new cam and new camwheel and all that plastic covering stuff that exploded when the belt/wheel let go. Was apparently running ok before that. Body good. Paint good. Interior ok. I don't really like the rubber spoiler thing built into the rear hatch though. I can get another camshaft ground to match existing one kinda cheaply. I also have a pair of cams out of an earlier 4.5 I think ? maybe early 4.7...dunno.
Car three: 1980 ROW 928S 3 speed auto with a M28/12 replacement motor in it. Car has sat for about 3 years at least. Car is complete and was running but not started in 3 years. Car has mechanical fuel injection. Needs brakes (spongy and crappy apparently). Body good. Paint good. Wheels nice (later model 18's I think ?). I like the shape of this car the best. Has spoiler/wing mounted on rear hatch. Interior needs work. No electric seats. It has a 928 motorsports enormous radiator in it too.
Also have spare 4 speed auto out of a 1985 (I think?) and the complete front end (suspension) out of a late 80's S4 that I was thinking about putting on the 1980 car along with a set of brembo black calipers out of a 944 Turbo.
So, question...if you guys had these things in the shed, what would you do. I want to keep one only (leaning towards the 1980 car but hey...) as a irregular driver. Sunday blasts into the hills, that sort of thing.
I generally prefer manual cars to drive, but hey, not in love with the idea.
I'm thinking convert engine to modern EFI (maybe take top end off the m28/22 and put on one of the others ?)....dunno. I thought about that as apaprt from being a modern and easy to manage system I have heard the main reason why theres hardly any forced induction kits for the early engines is due to the mechanical injection. Everyone seems to do them for the 32v engines only ? Might go supercharger later, might go turbo...dunno....lots of dunnos here.
Would appreciate some thoughts here guys.
Thanks !!!!!

Reason: The Nazis are getting upset.
it sounds like you have a lot of parts and you could probably make a few bux selling them.
How much cash do you think your going to have to spend to get a nice running car?
I will guess that any of the engines you have will need head gaskets plus all of the other unknowns.
The 928 when put together is an expensive collection of parts,
getting a 928 with all of the systems working is a bigger plus.
That said how much time do you have?
Do you have a place to storage all of the cars>?
After doing this a few times I would suggest to find a car you like,
thats been sorted out.
Pay the cash now and be driving tomorrow.
Well, I really only have space for two cars, so I was thinking I'd strip the manual car and then get rid of the body.
Time isn't much of an issue. I also don't really care about "originality" either. It's about the driving experience. Keeping things "correct" for that model/year means nothing to me.
Budgetwise ?...that's tricky. I don't want to spend a fortune and I also have to keep in mind I am in OZ so costs are higher than what Americans or Europeans are probably used to paying. Having said that, there's still ways and means of keeping things to a reasonable level.
I do take your point about just buying one that is all sorted out. That is always an option, but right now I'd like to have something to fill in some time. I have lots of that to spare.
Hi !
That's kind of a neat predicament in which you find yourself.
I mean, you could go so many different ways.
Based on my very recent and ongoing experience with an extensive, expensive Euro S refresh, I think I would be very tempted to pull the engine and transmission you most wish to drive, and plan to send those off to a pro for an experienced rebuild. I actually think you would save money, time, and consternation that way. While the engine and trans are away, you could probably offset a significant amount of your expenses by offering the various unwanted bits and pieces here for sale. When the refreshed engine and trans make it back home, you'll have new space and new money for the re-assembly. Just a thought. Best wishes on your eventual course of action. Keep us posted !! Interesting !!!!
What Stan said, you have three parts cars and no real project except removing parts. Hint on parts cars, the space they use up doesn't get smaller when you take them apart, it grows unless you get rid of the big pieces.
Restoring a 928 is a noble cause, but it costs two or three times as much as buying a well sorted 928. Parts are expensive, and in many cases the same parts fail on all 928's so only a limited amount of the parts on your parts cars would apply to making another parts car into a driver.
Getting it running is what most of us aim for, and it generally sucks. A 7/10's 928 delivers very little of the experience that a 9/10's let alone a 10/10's 928 does.
"928's" is the correct usage of the apostrophe when describing multiple 928 vehicles.
Uh, no it's not. The apostrophe is used in the possessive form only. It is never used to denote multiples - well, never unless you are unaware of proper punctuation.
Now you know what you used to know back in the 4th grade.
**** indeed.

Bought it up indeed. Swahili is a native english language?
I suggest you consult an authoritative text on singular possessive terms.
Swahili is a Bantu language. It has incorporated some elements of the Germanic languages (and by extension, Proto-Indo European), however it is not a "native english language".
Now you know something that, up until this point, you didn't know.
These forums are truly wonderful, are they not ?
I have edited the title of the thread so Poland doesn't get invaded again, or something.

Reason: The Grammar Fourth Reich must be stopped.
Car one: Is there a reason you can't take the time to put a battery in it and see what happens?
Car two: "camshaft belt wheel thing" and "cam stuff"
Car three: Like car #1, is there a reason you can't give it a once-over, slap a battery in it and see what happens?
It's difficult for anyone to give advice when you give vague descriptions and no photos.
