GT introduced in 89. How many 89 S4 with manual gearbox were there?
As the GT was introduced in 89, one should think that everyone went for that instead of the "old" S4 if they wanted a manual gearbox in 89. I can't imagine the price difference was huge since it is basically the same car except from some small performance improvements. Anyone have a clue how many produced?

201 for the North American market (from a previous post by Rob Edwards).
Of those, 128 had LSD and of those 41 also had the Sport Suspension (from a previous post by Hilton).
So, my '89 is 1 of 41.

I remember helping my Dad shop for his(now mine) back in 1989. In my late teens I was voracious reader of the car mags and I didn't know the GT model existed. Porsche didn't advertise the 928 very much at that point. Plus it wasn't like it is now where you can search the web for info and dealer inventory. Most dealers we looked at in NY/NJ area only had one 928 in stock...and they were usually autos. It was really hard to find a manual transmission car. As I recall the dealer had to do a trade with another dealer to finally get one with a color my Dad liked AND a 5 speed.
To that end...I've always wondered how many 1989 S4 Silver/Black 5 speeds were sold in the U.S. in 1989?

For the 1989 MY, the global production is:
S4: 3133 (556 with manual gearbox)
S4 Club-Sport: 7
GT: 473
Unknown: 1
So, 3614 1989 MY 928s.
But remember that the GT was sold only the last half.
And some GT prototypes are hidden into the S4s

Its hard to tell just what this data means because in 89 all the 928s were S4s. The 89 GT was in fact an S4 with the GT option. So the question is whether there were 3133 S4s without the GT option, which might mean that there were 556 plus 473 89 S4s with the five speed box, or it might mean that of the 556 S4s with the manual box, 473 of them were in S4s with the GT option. Then that does not coincide with the reported number of S4s with the 5 speed but which are not GTs.

What the data means is exactly what Samuel noted ....
1. 3133 S4's of which 556 were 5 speeds (not GT's).
2. 7 Club sport
3. 473 GT's .... which are readily identifiable by their options, most notably the M28.47 motor.
4. 1 Unknown
Total of all the above is 3614 cars for MY 1989.

There were no GT "MODELS" in 89, only S4 "MODELS" with the GT OPTION. The "GT" as a 928 model designation did not occur until 90.
