Cool Where to get headlights??

I would like to replace the headlights on my 81' with the flat face type. Is there a direct replacement for the stock size lights. I don't want the expense of going to the larger size light. I would like to go to a little higher wattage for more light while keeping the stock relay, wiring harness, etc... I have seen discussions here in the past onthis subject but was unable to find any info in the archives. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

The ones I've got are Hella units, 7" H4.
I know there was a lister selling these sets at one time, if he doesn't chime in, check your area for imports specialty parts stores or do a web search for them. The Big 3 may carry them or be able to get them also.

My 7 inch H4s came from 928 Specialists. Others may carry them as well.

J C Whitney ( one of the oldest mail order auto parts companies ) has a wide choice of 7 inch halogen lights (hi low) and H-4 bulbs of various flavors ........all illegal BUT much brighter . They fit right on the headlight bracket for 78-86 USA cars does leave you with the stupid plastic/chrome trim ring ...that was a cruel joke on the part of the Porsche engineers forced to put 7 inch seal beam headlights on the USA 928s by federal law . Think about it , it is the only chrome on a 928 (except for 1978 door locks).....and it is plastic ....

I just picked up a set of 7" bosch lenses and then picked up a set of 55/60watt piaa xtreme super platnum white, provide nice lighting but am considering running a relay with some bigger wire and going up to PIAA 100/90watts very illegal, but at least then I can see

Go with 8" H4 or H5 - updates the look of the car, and allows you to throw those silly chrome trim rings away.

Hella light units are NOT flat lenses. CiBie did have such a lens and I think Bosch did also.
The lighting units you want are defined as "E-code" (E for European) units. These are NOT D.O.T. approved, have no "aiming lugs" on the lens (no longer necessary), and they throw a much cleaner beam that irritates oncoming drivers MUCH less when you ramp up the wattage.

Ah Randy , how would fitting the original initial 1977 designed for the car unique to the 928 8 inch H -4 be considered an "update" ? It is a backdate return to the stylists original intent . You do not like those plastic chrome plated trim rings either ?

OK Jim - it updates the look of the US model cars to what they are supposed to look like.

I used those trim rings on the small burners of my stovetop - same size, but they tend to melt...

Great deal - until you factor in the $10 shipping and handling charges...

Brian, I'm certain Hella makes more that one unit; the ones I have are flat H4 units, made in Germany and they throw out the shaped beam patterns.
I don't know what E code is but there is an "E4" in a circle cast into the lenses. Clearly stated on the box "Not DOT approved, for off-road use only"

I'm a little slow here so let me be sure I've got it straight-- I can put 8 inch H-4 or H-5 lights in the same housing with no upgrade in wiring or relays and just skip the chrome ring?

How much is light improved over the standard issue sealed beams I have now?

Where do I buy them? Do you have a contact for the catalog mentioned above?

Thank you, Mark

Hey all, thanks for the input. Can I upgrade to the 100/80 watt lights without modifications to my existing setup. I ask this, assuming that the stock lights are the 60/55 watt version.
