Sorry that I don't have any insight on why this is happening. I feel your pain. When I re- did my 1987 a year or so ago, all went well, except now my defogger/ demist switch activates the passenger side mirror motors, and the mirror switch does not.
I either transposed wires in the door connectors, or something is shorting in the CE panel when I put it back. Frustrating.
In my 87 there is an idiot light in the pod that also illuminates with the ! light so you know what system is in error or needs attention. Is this the case in 1982 as well?

In theory there should always be an idiot light with the central warning, but I have the warning without any idiot lights.
Sorry to hear about your defrost/mirror issue. It is so easy to get things crossed. There are a LOT of wires in these things.
