Haven't forgotten my log-in, just been off the grid (imagine that). Thanks for all the comments, I haven't bought it yet, seller wouldn't take 4500. 5000 will be the price, if this were an 85 or newer I think I would have it already. The shop that I want to inspect the car is basically closed for the rest of the month due to vacation (eurasian auto in chattanooga). They worked on the car in the past and have the best 928 mechanic in town. I've always loved these cars and now that I've started down the road I'm leery about jumping on the first one I run across. The coolant issue and now learning from the owner that the AC is also inop have me looking for other examples. Maybe if this one sits awhile the owners stance will soften. Thanks again for all the comments, great board!

Really depends on what you want.
a.) If you want an 84 and this car has original paint, I would buy it now. Certain things tell me that this car will be a nice one. (Some people drew the conclusion that this car is fully documented. I did not understand this car to be fully documented. No matter.)
b.) If however you want an 85 or newer, like your post just above this one seems to indicate, don't buy it. You'll never be happy no matter how nice the car is.

I judge the USD 500.00 in this story to be irrelevant based on all that 928 ownership entails. Now think about that last sentence for a while. :-)

Red...You are correct, the $500 really doesn't matter. After spending time with the car this weekend and the fact this is the only one I've ever driven makes me want to see more examples that may be better sorted. I'd pay more for a well sorted car. The car does have complete documentation since new. The other issues (which I didn't mention earlier but will need attention) are...Speedo and Odometer don't work, passenger seat is inoperative, both front seat pleats have failed and will need replaced or repaired, rear interior quarter panels have both failed and are warped, the rear hatch won't stay closed, it will need 4 tires as the current ones are 16 years old, rear wiper doesn't work, it needs front brakes. A basic tune-up will probably also be required. That was just what I found without a PPI. All of this coupled with the coolant and AC issues have caused me to pause on this one. Also, it just felt slow driving it...I'm curious what the 85 and newer cars feel like and if the difference is appreciable.

And this is very suspect, based on that alone I would pass. Even if the paint is in good shape, this would kind of indicate that there's been little maintenance done. It is much easier to have complete documentation, if there was just little maintenance done in the first place! I had understood that it was more "up to date" than that!

Red...agree, maintenance records are all from first/original owner, second owner used the car very sparingly. Maybe drove it 1000 miles in 5 years. There are no maintenance records from him.

actually NOT the case......and taking a car apart, packing, and shipping plus COLLECTING the money is not FREE. Then you must get rid of the left over parts and chassis !

Uh, yeah, with so much inoperative and 16-year-old tires, this is starting to look like a "barn find." But since this is a 928 and not a 356, that's not a good equation.

Let me know if you need any help with this one. There are a couple of other people in Chattanooga you can trust. We have two different 928 events in the coming weeks. You may want to tag along.

Send me a Pm for additional contact info.

...and now - the rest of the story. All this failure stuff is common failure and it's nothing new here. However, what it says is that we have an owner who's let plenty of service go. What else has he skimped on? No longer a bargain from the bottom feeder point of view. Keep shopping.

sadly in todays world....an 84 USA spec automatic is not a quick car The looks far outshines the performance. You learn when "challenged" at a stop light to look over with a "you are not worthy attitude" do a dismissive little royal wave of the hand and slowly roll away from the light....
