Off the top of my head:
Things That Change with TB/WP service that can cause this symptom:
-- Spark plugs wires not in the cap correctly.
-- Oil still drained from the sump. (!!)
-- Oil Cooler Lines not flowing, due to remnants of plastic bags used to block the ports while the radiator was out.
-- Spark Plug loose, or something got into a plug opening if you had them out to kale rotating the crank easier.
Verify the plug wire routing and firing order vs diagrams on the radiator.
Remove the plugs and look at them for evidence of something wrong.
Slowly rotate the engine by hand with plugs out, feeling for something hanging up. Depending on where it "hangs", you can identify the cylinder(s) where the piston is at top of stroke.
Pull the top belt covers and VERIFY that the cam timing is correct.
Without the benefit of reading the whole thread... Verify that you removed the tensioner pin.
-----
Lifter noise is in the cylinder head. Piston slap is mid-side of the block. Crank bearing noise is even deeper. Think "stethoscope", but listen quickly.

Sounds like lifter noise from here. It may take some driving before it subsides.

Thanks Roger, Don, Dr. Bob & Ken...
- I started her up this morning to check the ATF fluid level since I changed my ATF cooler hoses...the knock was there, but maybe not as bad...ATF level was good.
- I ensured that all spark plug wires are connected securely to the rotor...I didn't remove the spark plugs during the procedure.
- From the view of the top belt cover hole, gears look correct at T|0
I put her back on the ground and plan to take her for spin around the block before I install the belly pan.
Stay tuned...
Thanks again Sharks...

Thank You! Thank You!
If it wasn't for the incredible Porsche 928 owners and members on this site, I would not own my car or try to tackle these fulfilling projects.
Special thanks to...
- Dwayne for an incredible TB write-up
- Ken for the extremely helpful liftbars, ingenious PKT-S and help along the way
- Roger for dealing with my continuous questions and providing support
- Greg for solving my hose paranoia
- Don, Dr. Bob and Sean for being an extra set of eyes on this and for support in the past.
On to the next project...

I used a quart of Rislone to get rid of my sticky lifter noise. Works great. Two-three oil changes later without it, and there will still be no lifter noise as it really cleans them up.

My S4 had the same stuck lifter noise after a month sitting. I used Swepco 502 and the noise vanished within a minute. That was two years ago and no more noise since.
